ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Education Association and Sto-Rox School District teachers held a demonstration before a school meeting Thursday night.

They claim 18 teachers have been seriously injured in school this year, mostly from breaking up school fights. Some of them had to be hospitalized.

And they said the district isn't doing anything about the problem.

--snip--

"Teachers and para-professionals have been hospitalized. We've had some that have missed work because of their injuries," said Engelherd.

Teachers said this has been a growing issue since the first day of class, but some school board members said they felt blindsided and attacked.

A few years back I had to break-up a girl fight at our church’s summer carnival. It was pretty serious. They were wailing on each other pretty good.

Unions are far from perfect. We all know that. But this story shows where unions can be useful. Management people love to cover things up. They ignore serious problems. Sometimes the only people willing to tell the truth are the union people.

P.S. I spent decades teaching in urban schools. And you can be sure of one thing. For every teacher assault that makes the evening news, 100 will go unreported. (Not an exaggeration.)

“Teachers and para-professionals”

That the he!! is a “para-professional”? I see/hear this fairly often these days especially on our local news channel. Are they temp. teachers? Are they wanna-be security guards? Are they parachutists who drop in to assist during fights? Good Lord. What on earth is the education system and media doing?

Oh, and don’t get me started on the use of the word “teens” who it comes to these stories of ferals in the school systems. (Rant/off.)

18 teachers have been seriously injured in school...breaking up school fights... And they said the district isn't doing anything about the problem.

I've known teachers - the mystery is easy to solve: the thugs are black... and the administrations are afraid of being called 'racists'.

Shame on the spineless administrators... they're NOT doing the kids, teachers or thugs any favors... by allowing this crap to go on...

As I noted elsewhere, I taught for many years in urban schools. And I never hesitated to break up a fight between two boys on my own. For some reason the boys usually listed to commands.

But a girl fight? No way would I intervene unless the odds were at least 2 to 1 in my favor. Those fights were brutal.

This is what happens when you get teacher’s unions running the show. You get hurt teachers all so some fat as* 68 year old retired English teacher can continue to get his\her diabetes\blood-pressure medicine paid at 100% and receive his\her pension for life. It’s about the free stuff and protecting the bureaucracy. Teachers in America are the best and worst of us.

But the minute they call in the police to deal with a violent child, and the police handcuffs the little darling, the news media will be all over it.

Paraprofessionals are the staff who are not required to hold a teaching license, such as teachers’ aides. Special education requires a lot of paraprofessionals. It’s not uncommon for some students’ IEP to require a one to one aide.

I would imagine it’s the paraprofessionals who receive the most injuries.

Just slap shock collars on the kids when they enter the school. They throw a punch, they get zapped.
