Mary Cains male coaches were convinced she had to get thinner, and thinner, and thinner. Then her body started breaking down.
At 17, Mary Cain was already a record-breaking phenom: the fastest girl in a generation, and the youngest American track and field athlete to make a World Championships team. In 2013, she was signed by the best track team in the world, Nikes Oregon Project, run by its star coach Alberto Salazar.
Then everything collapsed. Her fall was just as spectacular as her rise, and she shares that story for the first time in the Video Op-Ed above.
Instead of becoming a symbol of girls unlimited potential in sports, Cain became yet another standout young athlete who got beaten down by a win-at-all-costs culture. Girls like Cain become damaged goods and fade away. We rarely hear what happened to them. We move on.
Nike has come under fire in recent months for doping charges involving Salazar. He is now banned from the sport for four years, and his elite Nike team has been dismantled. In October, Nikes chief executive resigned. (In an email, Salazar denied many of Cains claims, and said he had supported her health and welfare. Nike did not respond to a request for comment.)

I’m sure I’ll be able to find some information by searching on Ms. Cain’s name.
I've known some pretty fast ones.
Track is especially hard on women due to physical build. This is not unusual if you follow women’s track. Distance running is especially hard on their bodies.
This will be soon moot due to the new breed of transmissions that will be competing.

Shifting into “Oh My” Queer....
Did you attend attend Ridgemont High?
Coaches/trainers who let that happen ought to be legally liable. Bigtime.
The girl athletes themselves should be body-aware enough to know not to ruin themselves this way.
I figured she lost out because Nike put guys calling themselves girls on the team and they, naturally, ran faster.
The irony of this is, that the very same 60’s / 70’s women’s movement Libs that yelled, screamed, bra burned, etc...for the Women’s movement are now yelling, screaming, etc...for a man’s right to declare himself a woman and compete against actual women in women’s sports.
Someone coined the phrase “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder” whoever that was, was so very correct. We are in a culture war with the truly unhinged in our society. And, we need to take it very seriously. We will regret it if we don’t.

Yeah...but Laz knows All of them..../s
I agree. Everyone knows better, but the drive to win destroys decency, common sense, even self-preservation. One might almost get the idea that sports is a demonic idol.
(Let's just say I'd like to remember it that way.)
Funny how life can imitate art, even if it’s inverted. My high school years were ‘Animal House’, and my college years were ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’. Dunno how it got ass-backwards like that. Wasn’t much in either movie I think I missed, though. I was a bad boy.
Thank you for the link!
Grandad told me you know you were born in Kentucky? Yeah. Then he said back then it was the state of fast horses and beautiful women. It changed son. Now its the state of fast women and beautiful horses. Took me till high school junior year to figure it out completely. :)
You had a good grandad. *chuckle* Mine worked in a tannery in upper PA his whole life, and taught me how to fish at age three. Our grandads came from a time when Men Were Men.
They are going to
A Stick Shift!
Maybe it's time to drug test all Nike spokesmen and sponsored athletes.
