Tiny Nevada town near secretive Area 51 braces for alien hunters

Connie West, co-owner of an alien-themed motel in the tiny U.S. desert outpost of Rachel, Nevada, believes they are coming no matter what. Not aliens, but alien hunters.

A whimsical invitation on Facebook has urged UFO enthusiasts to gather on Sept. 20 and “storm” nearby Area 51, a U.S. military base long rumored to house extraterrestrials and spaceships. More than 2 million Facebook users have said they plan to go.

Residents of Rachel, a 150-mile (240-km) drive from Las Vegas and home to roughly 50 people, are split on how to respond. Some sternly warn the public to stay away, fearing large crowds will overwhelm a town with no gas station or grocery store. Others, including West, believe the best course is to welcome them with a music festival dubbed Alienstock.

I tried to drive there one time from Reno. Gave up after hours of driving and nowhere near it yet. Didn't look that far on the map.

I imagine AAA will be busy with broken down VB Buses and such.

Imagine if they were concerned about a million illegal aliens invading our border. Hmmm?

As you enter the Extraterrestrial Highway driving north from Las Vegas, the following sign offers a warning:

Going to be interesting. Especially since there are those who believe that a man-eating creature has escaped from Area 51 labs and wanders the area. Dinner is comin' on!

The locals should jack up the prices on everything. Especially water.

That’s not the aliens they should be worried about.

I wonder if FEMA is on standby for when these fools run out of water and start dying. Maybe all that water left on a Peurto Rican runway can still be used.

Fearing they could be overwhelmed with visitors, officials in the remote Nevada county that’s home to the Area 51 military base have drafted an emergency declaration and a plan to team resources with neighboring counties and the state ahead of events next month tied to the “Storm Area 51” internet drive.

The elected board governing the county with about 5,200 residents conditionally approved two events Monday for tiny desert towns near the once top-secret U.S. Air Force test area known in popular lore as a site for government studies of outer space aliens.

“Oh, we’re taking this seriously,” Lincoln County Commission Chairman Varlin Higbee told the Las Vegas Review-Journal . “With the possibility of 35,000 to 40,000 people showing up, yeah, this is serious.”

The Nevada Test Site isn’t fenced (that would be like fencing Rhode Island... not a bad idea that), so back in the day when they were still doing nuke tests (underground), protestors would get in and try to hike to the tunnel portal. Security would know where they were all the time, and a bunch would get dehydrated and have to be rescued. Some actually made it to the tunnels, but the workers there who made seriously big bucks getting ready for the tests were less than sympathetic. One guy who chained himself to a bulldozer had the misfortune to have his shoes catch fire when the welders were cutting him loose.
