A £2billion project to confine the leaking of radioactive debris at the Chernobyl nuclear plant has been unveiled.

The structure – which took nine years to build – was constructed to secure the molten reactor core and 200 tons of radioactive material at the site.

Officials have described the shelter as the largest moveable land-based structure ever built, with a span of 257 metres and a total weight of over 36,000 metric tons.

Reactor Number 4 at the plant in what was then Soviet Ukraine exploded and burned on April 26, 1986, spewing radiation across Europe in the world's worst nuclear accident.

“The structure has an expected life of 100 years.”

we went from horse and buggy to private jets in less than 100 years. pretty sure we will figure out a way dispose of nuke waste in the same amount of time.

There was a tv documentary on this in 2017. For those who can access it is done by NOVA “Building Chernobyl’s Megatomb”. It was amazing. It will not only contain but there is a crane system inside like no other to work away at safely dismantling the insides.

Roughly analogous to the Chinese increasing the cloud of earth orbiting space junk by some magnitudes by crashing or exploding a satellite. BTW, you’ll labor long to find any reference to it on Google, in any place except your head’s personal Orwellian memory hole. Even when State central planners overcome that little issue of “how are you going to pay for it?” by using communist-capitalism, you’re still left with the deficit in prefrontal lobe thinking in control of gargantuan development projects.

“3.6 roentgen, not great, not terrible.”

Best TV mini series ever.

Agreed.
Anyone who hasn’t seen HBOs miniseries, should. It’s magnificent.Though the director disavows this message, any sane person derives the lesson that this is the natural consequence of having “masterminds” in control, and the show presents the full flower of the empire of lies our media works in building every day

Explained pretty simply in the final episode of the mini series.

That documentary also said the material inside the “tomb” will be radioactive for 20,000 years.

Somebody is going to dig for something 18,000 years from now and will not be happy on what they find.

Another great show on the nuclear subject was “Command and Control” regarding the ICBM explosion in Arkansas in the early 80’s. Think it was the “American Experience” series.

Those AF guys were incredibly brave.

That was a Titan missile. I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in the early 80’s. Was a nuclear weapons tech working with the Minuteman missile.

I was amazed at the fact that this missile type comprised so much of our nuclear arsenal from a power standpoint.

You rarely get a look at the inside workings of the ICBM force. Interesting documentary.

I took the time to read up on Chernobyl and get a basic understanding of how a Nuke Plant works, it’s surprisingly simple really...

Well, the first responders, some of them even picked up by hand the fissile material! And they live to this very day.

The hype and scare tactics regarding nukes, put the global warming folks to complete shame!

Nuke plant = Fissile material creates heat, boils water, moves turbine, creates electricity...

If lack of water, heat creates fire, fire is bad... Pouring water on nuclear fire bad for air....wind carries smoke and nuke steam, bad bad bad...

3.6 roentgen, I’m told it’s the equivalent of a chest X-Ray.
