The first trailer for Midway - this autumn's forthcoming World War II epic helmed by director Roland Emmerich [Independence Day, The Patriot, White House Down] - has been released, promising an explosive take on the Pacific battle of June 1942.

The movie - hailed as 'the next Pearl Harbor' - tells the story of the epic fight, which saw the Americans and Japanese clash once more.

Set six months after The Battle Of Pearl Harbor, the film is slated for a November 8 release, and boasts a stellar line-up of stars, including Mandy Moore, Nick Jonas, Luke Evans, Patrick Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Ed Skrein, Dennis Quaid and Aaron Eckhart.

'Pearl Harbor' was a historically-inaccurate steaming pile of crap.

Yep. The 1970s 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' was the far better film by lightyears! It even included some of the Japanese perspective. You left that film feeling educated as well as entertained. They knew how to make war movies in that era. 'Patton' was one of the greatest.

Yes, I will be hugely interested in how such a hard hitting movie is made in the snowflake era. I contend that there is no movie made in the 20th century that would be acceptible by today’s standards- even movies like Le Cage Au Faux and Mississippi Burning.

I watched the trailer. There was a scene showing some sailors ducking under a plane during an air attack. My father served in CBI during WW2 in the AAF. I remember he said that the first time he was strafed that he ducked near a plane and then said “this is no good”...after that he jumped into a ditch.

I’m on page 172 right now. I decided to read it again a few days ago. This will be the third time. A pleasure to read. Well written and very informative. No personal agenda on the part of the author which is refreshing lately.

“Tora Tora Tora is the only good Pearl harbor movie!”

+1. I was waiting for someone to note this. It was a very good and accurate movie.

Who would have guessed?

If the Japanese would have just walked through Mexico, they would have conquered the entire US.

I can’t help but think that the hand of God was present at Midway, and it was causing Admiral Nagumo to be indecisive when he needed to make a decision about the next strike. The nature of the battle bred paralyzing confusion in the cautious Nagumo. The result was that his carriers were in perfect condition for destruction by bombs when our dive bombers arrived over the fleet.

Another factor to consider with the Japanese defeat at Midway is their losses at Coral Sea. Not only did they lose Shoho, but Shokaku was damaged, and Zuikaku lost so many pilots that it could not participate in the Midway operation. The presence of one or both of those fleet carriers that had been a part of Nagumo’s carrier group at Pearl Harbor would have given the Japanese a potentially decisive advantage.

Indeed. Whenever I see it on the tube, that’s my cue to get something to eat/drink or go to the bathroom.

It was never going to happen. They would have had to choose between Hawaii and their real objectives in SE Asia and Indonesia. Not to mention that the winter waves which make the north shore of Oahu a surfer’s heaven would be hell for an invasion force trying to get ashore.

I agree it was a mistake to miss the fuel tanks and dry docks, but, Yamamoto knew they were there and chose NOT to hit them.

Why? Because the whole philosophy of the Japanese Navy (and to an extent, Halsey’s) was to have one massive sea battle with all the ships they could gather and all the ships we could gather and fight it out to the end.

They wanted to die in naval battle, not, in an air battle. The Americans refused to play that game with them, though, some of the older commanders like Halsey would have been ok with it, once we got our navy built up.

It has been said (in Sea of Thunder by Thomas anyway) that one of the reasons Halsey took off after the empty Japanese Carriers during the Philippines operations was due to this drive to have a major sea battle. AS it was, he missed the battle of Leyte Gulf, which was the end of the Japanese Navy as a fighting force.

I watched the trailer. It WAS just a video game. While flawed in some ways, the 1976 Midway was a really good movie. If you can see the TV version, it makes even more sense, and does indeed tie to Tora Tora Tora. And it has Toshiro Mifune in it, so, it must be a good, if not great, movie.

I watched Red Tails on TV.

It is amazing how those P-51’s could maneuver like F-22’s.

A swarm of killer bees will attack both fleets and they’ll have to send up every plane they can to mulch the swarm. Then the Americans back-stab the Japanese by sinking four of their anti-bee carriers. With deep regret and to save face, the Japanese in turn take down the bee-mashing Yorktown.

It’ll be billed as an environmental film and about the dangers of wontonly killing the bees plants (and the earth) need to survive.

From the point of view of the Japs should have happened and should have happened. If you look at the OOB the Japs would have taken Hawaii in a few days if there Amphibious Task force went to Hawaii instead of PI. They made a mistake and we benefited from it.

Many of the scenes in Midway were taken from the film Tora, Tora, Tora!

There was one scene were the japs are strafing Midway Atoll, and you could see volcanic mountains in the background!

I should say I very much like the 1976 Midway, I have the DVD, but it did have its flaws also.

They didn’t have the resources to take Hawaii and still go after the areas which had the oil and rubber and tin and other materials they were going to war to get. And consider how badly they botched their initial attempt at invading Wake Island, which wasn’t nearly as well defended as Oahu.

You realize that Luzon is about the same distance from Japan as Tinian? If the Philippines remain in allied hands because Japan has the bulk of their resources tied up defending China and Hawaii then places like the Marianna’s can’t be occupied by Japan either. Imagine how long the war would last having submarine’s launched from Manila?
