Not Secure Warning
Me | June 17, 2019 | 1raider1

Posted on 06/17/2019 4:22:37 PM PDT by 1raider1

Sometime ago a FReeper posted that his browser was warning him that Free Republic was "Not Secure". I just noticed that my browser, Opera, is giving me the warning in the area where the site www.freerepublic.com title is located. Is this something that happens on all browsers? I haven't noticed it before and have been using Opera for many years.

In before someone tells you to make sure you are logged-in.

I don’t know about Opera, but on mobile Safari I get the same message. I think it’s just telling you that the website is not encrypting traffic via ssl. I didn’t even realize until I researched this message that using ssl was becoming more commonplace for security on non-financial related websites. I thought it was just for banking sites and other similar sites that would transmit sensitive information.

In the case of FreeRepublic, nothing to worry about.

I’ve been getting that ever since we switched to Linux and started using Opera. (We also get a ‘content blocked’ notice that I’ve never understood.)

Oh, Well...

The industry is going anal about security.

Why do I care if I am viewing a public news site. No need for encryption crap.

It’s like ‘Crying Wolf’ over every data transmission. Reserve security for matters that matter.

I have noticed the warning on Chrome sometimes. I don’t use Chrome regularly.

As for SSL, I have used Https-everywhere for a couple of years. It automoatically tries to connect the local browser to an ‘https’ version of a website — if the website has an ‘https’ version.

https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere

Https-everywhere is available for Firefox, Firefox on Android, Chrome and Opera.

I’ve been getting the message in Safari for about the last month or so. Maybe after the upgrade to MacOS 10.14.5

They only need to spend a couple bucks for SS Cert and it would be “secure”.

I am also an Opera user. Are you also getting the message: "The extension upgrade requires additional permissions. Go to the extension manager to accept the upgrade."

I can't figure it out!

I mailed Jim Robinson about this when it happened to me.

He responded, Make sure to use the SECURE LINK to log in every time.
That link is https://www.freerepublic.com

You can paste & bookmark it if you dont want to type it in every time.

www.freerepublic.com or freerepublic.com are not secure links, and can allow others to access your account.

PS, if you’re only recently receiving the Not Secure or Not Private warning, it could mean your account has been breached.

So, change your password, too.

Well, I’m not getting it on FR. The only other sites I frequent are Weather Underground, Drudge, Facebook and Newsbusters, not getting it on any of those either. Hope you can figure what it means and get it solved.

I think it’s just telling you that the website is not encrypting traffic via ssl.

That's exactly right. I run a car-related forum and have installed a paid SSL certificate so that all traffic is directed to the https:// connection (puts a little "lock" next to the address in the browser). For a forum like this, probably the only reason to have SSL is to encrypt user name and password when logging in. (or if any financial transactions are made). Just posting and reading the forums isn't really a risk.

Wonder why they don’t just do a 301 redirect from http:// to https:// so that everyone gets https all the time.

Easy enough to do with an .htaccess file.

It should at least be done on a login page.
