I literally received zero help from my high school counselor. They only helped the kids who were in trouble all the time.

Someone needs to tell this little girl to step up to the real world, pull up her big girl drawers, and move on. She may be smart but she lacks one thing necessary for success...class. She will be remembered in a most negative light.

I have to say that I had a great experience with my guidance counselor in high school. He was a coach and was gifted in dealing with students. I talked to him many, many times about my family’s debts due to the treatment of my little sister’s cancer, and about my abusive father. This counselor was always sympathetic and it really helped to talk to somebody. At graduation I won the largest monetary award (total shock) and I know that he had something to do with it. One time I accidentally referred to him at home and my father said he wanted to go down to the school and punch the counselor in the nose (he didn’t but it scared me to death).

To those criticizing this girl, go straight to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200. If you had been in the public schools for as many years as I was and saw how teachers' children were given preference in getting scholarships and all other benefits in schools and how the poor were neglected, you might understand. If you saw how immoral teachers were upheld and good teachers were moved out, maybe you would get it.

She did the right thing and tried to point out the corruption. If you criticized her, you ARE a part of the problem. Unforgivable. This whole nation is corrupt. Even those who call themselves conservatives are apparently corrupt. It's all about control and money.

Parents and kids do go privately to all of these paragons of pedagogy, and because they are union, nothing gets done.

This woman’s speech is necessary because every other venue is rigged by the union. You take it, then suck their teeth and shake their heads. You leave and there are notes kept that generally distort things such that it all becomes ammunition for more headcount, and you get nothing.

They have plenty of people to do the job. They just don’t do it.

What I love is that the market is starting to move. Colleges are feeling it. Nobody is willing to pay those prices any more for a degree that means less and less.

Can’t she search on her own?

Yes, she can, but the guidance counselors have the inside track and connections. They actually do and know WHO to contact. That information is reserved for those whom they WANT to succeed. It IS a rigged system, frequently. Have you all forgotten about the school bribery cases that just happened? Really?

It is obvious that you have never worked in a school system.

Do not venture into that world, I did and now actively campaign for the abolition of public education.

It's like the DMV without the excellent customer service.

Sorry but sometimes you have to step out and call it like it is. The administration would have clearly known what was going on. Good for her.

I had to take an art class in HS. The female teacher was well known as a drunk; she was always “loopy”. During the class time, she would leave about three times to “go to the restroom” and always took her purse, where her booze was carried. ....This was in the late 1950s.

She is blaming the counselors for not doing their work. But, ultimately, she owns her own future and is responsible for doing her own work to find scholarships. If she saw them being lazy and not doing enough, it was up to her to find other solutions.

Her choice of words and phrasing just screams “I’m entitled” to me.

When should she have gone through the right channels according to most of you? Had she used your approach, she probably would have been labeled a trouble maker, and she would not have been named validictorian. The administration would not have allowed it. They would have found some way to deny her the honor.

The principal’s remarks about her not following her approved speech indicates this. He never said that her remarks would be investigated to see if there were improvements needed. The coverup for incompetent employees will continue as usual.

She lives in the past and she will not make a good employee. She will constantly find faults with other people whenever she has any short falls. I feels sorry for anyone looking at hiring her. She will constantly plan to get even with people that might have done something to her. Pray that she will learn to forgive and look at all those obstacles as opportunities for what she had accomplished.

With respect, when I was in school (’85 grad), that was our only option (looking for them ourselves). The counselors were coaches who need something besides sports to keep their jobs. Nowadays, (and I have two kids who’ve recently graduated) the school counselor is the focal point and clearinghouse for nearly ALL scholarship information. We have a great one and she made sure that every kid had the information. It was up to them to do something with the info, but she was always available to help. If my kids’ school is like most, and I think it is, a lousy counselor could really hurt a kid’s chance for scholarships. That’s not right, especially if the counselor has the access that the students don’t.

What do you expect?

When you teach critical theory instead of critical thinking, you are going to have nothing but people who point out the failings of a system, no matter how good or bad it may be... because that’s all they have been taught to do.

Taxpayers should have the right to hear how well and how poorly their tax paying dollars are being spent. These kids deserve much better. It appears this was the only avenue for her to get her message out and she was quite brave to do so. The Principal deserves to be “reassigned” and will be. It took the courage of a mere student to bring this to light? Good for her! Where were the MIA parents, PTA, School Board?
