Insanely vain vanity: WHY??? Why do people park backwards???
dangus

I can't handle it anymore. My curiosity has burned for decades about this, and I finally decided that hey, there's a thing called the internet so I can ask:

Why do between about 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 people insist on parking backwards, despite the fact that it's obviously MUCH more difficult. I always get stuck waiting for these people why they try over and over to straighten their cars out. WHY?

I can't detect any trend in demographics... young v old, north v south, city v urban, white v non-white, men v women... just a consistent portion of people who INSIST on blocking me for fifteen minutes while they park backwards! Please... I'll just presume you're someone who can do it in one move, every time and never cause massive jams in parking lots... someone just tell me WHY you do it!!!

That one kills me. In the last month I have probably almost gotten into three accidents backing out of a parking place and having somebody race behind me.

Why does my wife drive around the parking lot ten times looking for a closer space to the store’s front door so she doesn’t have to walk another 50 feet to the store?.................

So that google street view doesn’t get your plate number when you are visiting your mistress. ;-)

For some people, it is easier to back into a space with two parked cars beside them then backing out into traffic.

My daughter the petroleum engineer says they were taught that when on a rig site, to always park for a quick exit, in case things went south (fire, gas leak, etc). She always parks this way now.

Leave earlier, be more patient, and just accept that someone might delay you while you’re on your way to your destination.

When someone delays you just turn on some music, breathe, and relax.

Or take a bus, a cab, an Uber, ride a bike, walk, or just stay home.

(-:

Yep..my crew cab straight axle f250 will back into spaces much easier than going in forward

I also back into curbs and suck in front of stores so i can load stuff directly into my trunk or hatch than having to out out in parking lot

It’s safer and quicker when exiting.

Yeah. I get pulling out forward. But pulling in backward is so much harder than pulling out backward. I generally gear towards spaces where I can pull through, forward in and out, best of both worlds.

Are you serious? You ever see fire trucks or ambulances park regular in their garages? Ask yourself why do they back in and there’s your answer.

Is it 1 in 5 or 1 in 10? Or is it 25 or 6 to 4?

Are those Questions 67 and 68?

Ive attended 3 separate colleges, and at each one it was a fine to back into a parking stall. Like they weren’t raking us over the coals with the cost if books, tuition, and other “fees”...

I do admit I like to “pull through.” Thanks, though. I can actually understand how it’s easier to avoid hitting someone.

One reason is so they can’t read your license plate...(Many states do’t require a front plate).

They may have outstanding warrants, or they prefer not to be ID’d by someone looking for them or their vehicle...etc etc...

Good point. There was recently a shooting in a parking lot where the bad guy shot a man trying to back out of his parking space. The guy ended up with a spinal injury and was paralyzed. It is easier to flee a bad incident if you don’t have to watch where you’re going in a mirror

If you live in a crowded community it’s easier to get into a tight space by backing in. Parallel parking, here, is required to pass your driving test.

I also pride myself in backing into parking spaces with my full-sized SUV. I refer to such things as “man skills”.

Went to a defensive driving school about 15 years ago for my position at the time. The things this guy did with my Jeep Wrangler that defied the laws of physics.

He was really adamant about backing into a parking place, and pulling out forward when you leave. A lot safer for pedestrians. and escaping any 'unfriendly' encounters...

OK.. YOU’re the one I’m mad at. :-) Making twenty of us wait in a line behind you while you back in so you can save two seconds when you leave!!!

We don’t want to have to 4-point the exit on our getaway car when our criminal cohorts come fleeing out of the store, guns a-blazin’. Time is of the essence at that point.
