NASA Receives Signal From New Horizons Spacecraft After Historic Flyby 4 Billion Miles From Earth
KTLA ^ | 01/01/2018

Posted on 01/01/2019 11:41:50 AM PST by BenLurkin

Although the flyby occurred at 12:33 a.m. ET on Tuesday, the spacecraft is so far from Earth that the “phone-home” signal didn’t reach us until about 10:30 a.m. ET.

Mission scientists were relieved about the success because there was only one chance to get it right as New Horizons screamed past Ultima at 31,500 miles per hour. This incredible feat was possible because thousands of operations on the spacecraft worked in sync.

“We’ve just accomplished the most distant flyby,” mission operations manager Alice Bowman said. “This science will help us understand the origins of our solar system.”

New Horizons has also sent back a first look at Ultima Thule — taken from half a million miles out, so pardon the pixels.

They will be receiving the equivalent of 2 high resolution Iphone photos per day. They should have some high resolution photos to show by tomorrow if all went well.

The Apollo mission cost roughly $25 billion. For that, we got Tang and a bag of rocks.

BS. It was a series of missions, not one. Get it right. For the ignorant out there like you, we received a whole lot more than that. You obviously missed it all.

It takes about 6 hours for one way communication at this point. It disn’t transmit anything at the instant of its closest approach, but several hours later.

Tang is still around, what I miss are the space food sticks. They were pretty much like the high protein bars of today and tasted the same.

For that, we got Tang and a bag of rocks.
We won't mention the huge leap in medical equipment nor the miniaturization of chips that now make computer that fit in your pocket and are unbelievably more powerful that any in those days. You'll notice that Tang was made in 1957 by General foods not NASA

Apollo was canceled because it was so expensive.

Apollo was cancelled due to failure of political will as was Project Orion before it. Money was not the issue.

Me too... Because as it is they were still not sure if it one object or two in a binary orbit with each other. I am VERY curious in this aspect.

So many “celestial and space events” are turning out to be duds the last few years. Be nice to actually get some decent stuff from all this for a change. :)

Thanks again!

These types of lists are a huge stretch of wishful thinking.

As an example, here is a history of LASIK, from The LASIK Vision Institute:

https://www.lasikvisioninstitute.com/the-history-of-lasik-surgery/

I appreciate the correction about Tang predating the Apollo mission.

That leaves $24 billion for a bag of rocks and bragging rights for the moon landing.

Best

Based on your own comments, the only rocks you got are in your head.
