Police officers in San Francisco may no longer demand that suspects – whether handcuffed or not – sit on the ground or sidewalk at a crime scene, the city’s police chief writes in a department memo.
The practice is viewed as “demeaning” to suspects, city police Chief William Scott has determined, according to the Bay Area’s FOX 2.
The change is “aligned with 21st century policing, our department values and our commitment to providing safety with respect to everyone whom our officers encounter,” a police department spokesman told FOX 2.
“In order to carry out duties respectfully and professionally, sitting a subject on the ground or sidewalk should be done only as a last resort and only when necessary,” the chief’s memo says.

It is basic officer safety to get the person down and under control. Sitting is preferable to the person than prone laying face down

I guess they can fill the trunks of the squad cars with folding chairs, but maybe those are not “nice” enough.

I got cuffed and made to sit on the ground once. I was actually a tangential witness to the fight but they just cuffed everyone. I could have made an issue of it (hell, I was just packing up my gear from playing) but A) I get that cops can’t take chances and B) that’s the breaks for playing a biker gig, adds ‘cred’ plus C) I’m 6’, 200 pounds, look more bad-ass than I am - especially when dressing for the crowd (nice old school American made motorcycle jacket, bandanna).
It’s a fine line - cops need some safety but ACCUSED (or in the wrong place at the wrong time), or even arrested is not the same as being GUILTY of a crime, and sure as hell not the way to engender support for your local police.

more dead cops or more dead suspects who take advantage of their physical position of resist and fight with the cop. Then some will consider this lesser suspect restraint as the cop baiting him to resist and fight and then BANG BANG BANG and then protests and more animals get free TVs and tennis shoes.
Whether or not it is demeaning, in San Francisco it is certainly dangerous!!

Officer safety is subordinated to prisoner’s comfort. Perfectly consistent for a city that lets bums crap on the sidewalks but will ticket the owner of a dog that does. That’s what they think about people. Not demeaning at all!
So the police chief is a PC snowflake. Great! As an aside, being in san francisco is demeaning.
Fine, hog tie them and feet to hands and lay them face down on the ground. They’ll complain less about sitting when that’s an option.
So mount cargo boxes on the tops of cop cars and fill them with lawn furniture and beach chairs.
