New, steeper Bayonne Bridge shut down after cars can't make it up the incline in snow

Not an engineering problem, it's just weather. The ground is still warm, the snow is heavy and wet. The first car to drive over it turns it to slush, by the 4th car, it's soft ice.
On the way back from the grocery store today, I hit the same conditions on some very mild slopes. 10 to 15 mph on a 55mph road.
I hit that situation again on an flat bit of un-plowed road close to home. Got to practice my fishtailing control early this year.
Lots of roads around here in Central/NW Jersey are as steep or steeper than the Bayonne Bridge approach. This is a known problem, schools shut early. Only heartless capitalists keep their employees working in such weather, so the rest of us can rush to buy bread and milk. Or early thanksgiving supplies, whatever.

Free Parking is a large part of what made America Great.
If you have to pay to park you may be living with too many cornered ‘rats. Or you should move into the real downtown and give up your car.
Quite a few apartments have storage bins in the basement.

You would think people would know better in the Pittsburgh area, but the range of winter driving skills is extreme. On one hand you have the jay-birds who do not adjust their speeds at all-- they slip and slide all over the road and either get involved in fender benders or cause them. At the other extreme, you have the timid Tillies who over adjust-- they slow so much they can't get up even a fairly minor hill and neither can the mile long line of people behind them.
There are, fortunately, a few people who know enough to drop into a lower gear and keep it slow and steady up the hill without fishtailing.
I think PennDOT actually spoils people with their constant salting and deicing when they can get there. They shine in the winter; the rest of the year not so much.

which is steeper than it used to be, spokesman Joe Pentangelo said. Michael Corleone says hello. And your bridge is too steep.

They just don’t know how to drive in snow.

Most people in NJ don’t have snow tires. We don’t get enough snow to justify the cost and storage headache. Instead everyone has all-weather tires. So that means that for most people here, this small snow in Nov is no different than a deep one in Feb, from a tire perspective.

Salt dissolved in water seems to get everywhere. Paint never seems to be a 100% seal and once yu get a few rust blisters........
Look at all the painting swabbies do to their ships and they are still rusty all the time.
