I’ve also used a radar detector for my own behavior modification. Between that and cruise control, no tickets for a long time. :-)

Have heard of fires from cat converters. Saw a couple before from engines running after throwing parts out the bottom end and losing oil. Some will keep running, and the noise reveals the problem. Oil flames tend to be bright, while fuel flames can sometimes be hard to see. Oil smoke runs from light blue to black depending on the size of the fire.

PASS

PULL (the pin)
AIM (the nozzle at the base of the fire)
SQUEEZE (the trigger)
SWEEP (side to side)

Although I tried to do this with two extinguishers I had in my truck for a car on the side of the highway. Both of them failed. So keep them recharged!

Meh. In the late ‘90s Road & Track rented a race track (Talladega?) and did a high speed test of about 20 cars using a 5th wheel for accuracy. A Maxima SE with a 190hp engine hit 142mph. A Mitsubishi Eclipse with a small turbo 4cyl hit something like 138mph. If the shape of the car is slippery enough you can get some surprising speeds without a huge amount of horsepower.

FHP uses Dodge Chargers pretty much exclusively for cruisers.

4 Things to Know About the Dodge Charger Police Car

Sounds like a decent vehicle. Bet it was maintenance issues and/or guys abusing their ride.

Nope it wasn’t the Toyota it was the CAT on the FHP Unit on the dry grass. That CAT was probably high mileage and due for replacement. They clog up when the Honeycomb inside the CAT starts to melt and blocks the exhaust superheating during the high speed chase. The hot gases can’t get out of the system and the vehicle will slow down due to back pressure reverse choking the engine. I have seen a few get red hot while up on the lift at the shop.

If He had pulled the Unit back on the pavement while backing up the Unit would have been saved and FD could have put the grass out when they got there.

Did anybody else see the Left Front tyre Pop when it burned through ?

Do FL vehicles have emissions standards to meet? If so, are cop cars exempted? Just curious :-)

I watched the video a few times. Some observations:

1. The officer is cruising at 73 mph. I looked several times at the video and did not see his target car going faster than other traffic, so maybe he or she was going at max, 15 mph over.

2. The officer then drives in the median to change direction and give chase, turning on lights and siren.

3. He reaches speeds of 142 mph. Imagine you are going 65 mph in the right lane, there is a car in the left lane and suddenly, out of no where, a police car with lights and siren is right behind you. You panic and move quickly to the shoulder...unfortunately, the trooper is going so fast that he is already on the shoulder attempting to pass you and he hits you.

4. Could have been some fatalities there.

5. He basically admitted what he did was dangerous just before he gets out of the car.

6. I wonder if he is still employed by the FL Highway Patrol.

I strongly suspect that cruiser caught fire due to a hot exaust coming into contact with what appears to be very dry grass. Not the 1st time I’ve seen that happen in Florida.

From last month....

Vehicle Part Sparked Deadly CA Wildfire Investigators say “superheated” pieces of a catalytic converter ignited the 90,000-acre Ferguson Fire that killed two firefighters this summer.

You'd think LEOs would be made aware of the danger.

Don’t know about FL Emissions.

As far as I know they still have CATs on them.

I know in Texas that DPS (State Trooper/Highway Patrol) still have to be Inspected for Safety and Emissions but the Tags/License Plates are EXEMPT and Permanent.

Well, since wildfires are dangerous and can be expensive, FL might want to make sure the CATs on their cop cars are being replaced in a timely fashion.

Doing flips in the median is a common practice I think but most of the time they seem to lay in wait behind overpass abutments and such on the same side of the highway. I agree, the whole thing didn’t seem very safe. As far as still being with the FHP, I’d say probably.
