The philosophy major concedes that his student loan balance of around $20,000 isn’t as large as the burden shouldered by many other borrowers, but he said his difficultly finding a college-level job in the U.S. has made that debt oppressive nonetheless. “If you’re not making a living wage,” Haag said, ”$20,000 in debt is devastating.”

The job ads are full of offers for software developers, electrical engineers, chemical engineers ...
I don’t recall seeing any for philosophy developers or engineers though. He should have thought of that before he embarked on his journey - there should have been a viable destination.
The best advice when going on college visits is to go to the student union and look at the job board offers for graduates. If not a lot of jobs listed in your major do some serious reflection.

He’s probably looking specifically for a job as a philosopher; more likely eastern philosophies.
It is correct that if he has developed good reasoning, analytical logic, and writing skills that used to go with a philosophy degree then he should be able to apply them to a reasonable job that requires those skills. Companies are begging for those skills which are sadly lacking in most graduates.
If he did not learn how to apply and adapt his knowledge and skills to other taskings then he surely belongs in India and out of our social welfare system.
When I was 18, a lot of adults I respected highly told me I was too intelligent not to go to college. It was difficult to respond to their comments diplomatically, because they had kids or grandkids my age, and they could not imagine those kids failing to get into a good college.
I didn’t want to waste four years, or get exposed to political indoctrination and drunkards, so I went to work. Started with minimum wage. Before my 19th birthday I took parental advice about real estate, flipped some properties. Got not a single dollar of help from anyone.
Barring war, famine or pestilence I’m set for life already, in my mid-twenties. No mortgages, no debts, nice house. It wasn’t even difficult.
I still work, just in case. :) Maybe someday I’ll need a diploma! (Hundred-thousand dollar wall art.)
That pix captures the situation two of my grandson’s experienced... Now both of them have 6-figure salaries...and lots of guns...
They use to, but now with automation even a Philosophy major who can say: “Do you want fries with that?” in english is no longer guaranteed a job.
All the posters above are missing the core piece of information:
NONE of these snowflakes wants a JOB where they MIGHT have to actually WORK. NONE .
They ONLY want a PAYCHECK—without any level of accountability for the quality of their work production.

OK- So I left completely after 4 years ++ there.
It took 2 1/2 people to replace most of my work load & some of it hasn’t been done since. That was 1975, at a major So Calif employer.

A bachelor’s degree can be done in 18 months. Even 4 years is more than a year longer than it used to take.

Surely some of his liberal professor buddies will help him get out of debt. You know, because they are all so “caring.”
Just because he lives in a jungle and we cannot see him doesn’t mean that his debt ceases to exists.
He should have learned that.
Our oldest grandson finished all the requirements to graduate from high school a year ahead of time. He is a bright kid so his school counselors all advised him to take first year courses at a community college. He ignored their advice and is instead going to diesel mechanic school for free this year. He plans to move to Alaska and support himself up there for a year to establish residency. Then he plans to get a fire science degree for free at their award winning fire academy.
The kid is always working. He has been working as a mechanic in his other grandfather’s automobile shop and also changing semi-truck tires on the freeway in his fathers truck tire and repair business. He has also received awards from the volunteer fire department that he works with.
Our niece joined the air force right out of high school. She was sent to the middle east for 15 months and saved enough money that when she returned she put a down payment on a house north of Sacramento with her boy friend who went to voc school and became a welder then got a high paying job at an oil refinery. She is still working for the air force. The two of them are 23 and got married. Their friends are just starting to graduate from college mostly with useless degrees and many are loaded with debt and moving back in with their parents.
Our higher education system has been out of control for many years with expenses increasing at over twice the rate of inflation and professors and administrators getting paid exorbitant amounts of money. Grade inflation means that kids get a high GPA for substandard achievement. This causes the degrees to be worth less than they would otherwise.
A philosophy major can’t find a “college-level job”? I’m shocked!
He has the perfect job opportunity in India. Perfect example of why you should practice birth control.
Just a con game by the California higher education thugs.
Extend a 4 year program by a couple of years.
