ESPN has found a way to keep from being in the middle of any national anthem controversies on their air this year by not putting it on their air.
According to Sara Fischer of Axios.com, ESPN president Jimmy Pitaro said their intention was to not show players doing whatever they may or may not be doing during the song during their Monday Night Football presentations.
We generally have not broadcasted the anthem and I dont think that will change this year. Our plan going into this year is to not broadcast the anthem, Pitaro said. Again that could change. Its unpredictable what could happen in the world but as of now, were not. We have communicated that back to the NFL. They have not asked but as courtesy and good partners we have let them know what our plans are.
Thats one way to avoid the attention, at least until the President decides to start tweeting at ESPN about how unpatriotic they are because he knows it riles up the people he wants riled.
Of course, its also reasonable to wonder whether Pitaro came up with this idea all on his own, or whether it stemmed from conversations with his good partner who very much wants this to go away.
Oh goodie that will fool us
Oh, please. Anytime a player doesnt stand for the anthem, the media rushes out a story on it as they know it will get attention.
Right, that ought to calm everyone down.
Except announcing it makes it clear that ESPN and the NFL seem to want to hide player reaction, regardless of their alleged history of not showing the playing of the National Anthem.
“What! You mean those. long haired, pinko, commie, liberal fags weren’t broadcasting the opening anthem?
If the rest of the networks would do the same, perhaps this will go away.
I am suggesting a facebook or twitter movement to sing the national anthem right before kickoff . If you can get someone to jump down a lead it. ESPN can go to hell. I do not go. I do not watch but patriotic Americans do.
Other sports don't do it - they use the time for commercials or introducing the game.
Mission accomplished.
Tells me the boycott is working and they are trying to boost ratings
Yeah, that will solve the problem.
Ostrich, meet ESPN.
Ya just can’t make this crap up.
LOL!!!
We’ve told them why for the last two years, and they simply don’t believe that that is the reason.
Bingo!
But, dey gots to lets them felons do their thing.
What a bunch of pussies !!
Ridiculous. They NEVER showed it. Cut into valuable commercial time. With the kneeling they couldn’t get enough of it. Cost the owners money but they could have ordered the cameras to not show it. Push our buttons. Billionaires won’t miss anything. Millionaire athletes can wink/wink at them.
The playing of the anthem was not shown for years and years. It takes the platform away from the America haters so in the end it’s not a bad thing.
