Bans on barbecues eased in parts of Sweden

Authorities in several Swedish counties have lifted bans on barbecues on private property.

Bans on outside grilling, including at home, remain in place in five counties, TT reports.

A total nationwide ban on lighting fires, including home barbecues, was introduced at the end of July at the request of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (Myndigheten för samhällskydd och beredskap, MSB).

That ban has now been eased by counties in several areas. The five counties in which bans remain in place are Skåne, Blekinge, Halland, Västra Götaland and Östergötland. Further details on current bans can be found on Sweden’s emergency services information website Krisinformation.

While the ban has been lifted in other counties, authorities have stressed in many cases that barbecues should not rest directly on the ground.

Restaurants and commercial camping sites have also been given permission to light grills, provided the necessary precautions are taken.

In most areas, bans on lighting campfires in natural areas are still in force, as is use of permanent outside barbecues in these locations. Full details are available on individual county websites.

Breaches of the ban on barbecues have been punishable by fines, with one man in the town of Åhus in Skåne receiving 30 different penalties, totalling 19,500 kronor, for repeated violations.

what they need is to simply make stronger laws against setting fire to other people’s property.

That’ll fix it for sure.

They use the terms barbecue and grilling as if they are interchangeable. They are not. BBQ is low, slow and smoked while grilling is hot and (relatively) fast.

The word 'barbecue' has become a generic term for outdoor cooking in general, although with more folks (men, mostly) discovering the wonders of Southern barbecue, the misnomer is bound to become less common.

For the uninitiated and professional alike:

Why was the ban lifted in some places? The article does not answer the “Why” snd “Why for those places”.

Yep and you need two rigs. One for BBQ and one for grilling.

I honestly have not found a better grilling rig than an Aussie BBQ. You can get the perfect temp of 750F consistently. Use your IR thermometer and know the inverse square root law. (Steaks love 750)

For BBQ an Egg. Add a controller (PID) with the air management function (fan) and internal temp sensor.

I have a smoker, but lately I have been using kind of a hybrid method for making ribs... I have sort of deluxe but cheap large charcoal grill that I got recently from Walmart on clearance for $88. I start a smaller than normal fire on the opposite side from where I place the ribs. On the side of the grill above the fire I place a pan of water and at the very far end a cylinder with holes in it filled with hardwood pellets and light one end with a propane torch. It is called an “A-MAZE-N 12’’ Pellet Tube Smoker Oval Design”. I bought it from the giant liberal online retail giant that starts with an A. There are similar devices that do the same thing available all over or you could make your own with a couple tin cans that you have drilled holes in.

I open a lower vent part way by the fire and one vent part way on the opposite upper side of the grill keep the grill at about 300F by adding a few briquettes whenever the temperature starts dropping. I don't like the flavor of the smoke from fires that have been starved of oxygen.

This is hotter than I normally smoke ribs at. The :A-MAZE-N” smoking cylinder I have makes smoke with the wood pellets for about 4 hours which is coincidentally how long cook the ribs. I cook them to an internal temperature of 170F. This doesn't cook the meat till it is falling off the bones like 8 hours in the smoker, but they sure taste delicious and juicy if you start with some quality pork ribs. I am lazy so around here I get them pre-marinated at Costco or Safeway.

Another FReeper coined “carbeque” to more accurately describe the situation.
