Don’t drive on US95 between Winnemucca and Marsing after dark, especially near Jordan Valley. Lots of deer on the move!

The other thing is, bring bikes if you have them, and check out the Weiser River Trail and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes/Route of the Hiawatha.

When visiting Coeur d’Alene don’t hit the elk. They’re big and can do some damage.

You are going to the wrong college in Idaho! Boise State has the best football team, a great city, and you don't have to drive as far!
nonetheless, all of my family went to U of I, they turned out all right! :)

"Moscow is a nice low crime town but the school is only 2 miles from a Recreational cannabis store on Washington side of the border. The Moscow area is a pleasant place to live, however is one of the most liberal areas in Idaho."

Nailed it. I live a couple hours south of Moscow. My son just graduated high school and didn't want to go to Moscow because of the social atmosphere. He picked what his liberal schoolmates call a 'cowboy college' in Idaho State University in Pocatello, southern Idaho. Not sure about the 'cowboy' part, but certainly nicely conservative and a lot less 'woke'.

The shortest route between SoCal and Idaho is to go to Bishop, hook East to Walker Lake, keep going North and get on 95 to Winnemucca and then North through Oregon (which is now 70mph vs 55 in the past) to Idaho. With that route you can visit Manzanar (sp) and if you leave early enough, there is a winery somewhere near Marsing.

Watch your speed on those empty Nevada roads.
The only two times I’ve been pulled over have been in Nevada.

On your way back to California, if you have time, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

The park is located 9 miles east of Crescent City on Highway 199. See also Redwood National and State Parks HQ (Information Center) at 1111 2nd St in Crescent City.
