FULL TITLE: Dying anorexia patient, 25, is denied treatment for the disorder by her insurance company who claim 'it's a luxury' as her weight drops to 58lbs
A 25-year-old woman with a debilitating eating disorder is preparing for the possibility of an early death as her insurance company treats a medical program she requires to live on as a luxury.
Katrina Howard, who succumbed to anorexia nervosa in her early teen years, has been sent from hospital to hospital for treatment - but doctors fear they are running out of effective options for the young woman - who has whittled to a frightening 58 pounds.
Howard grew up in a low-income family and is insured by Georgia Medicaid, a modest medical assistance program co-funded by the state and federal government.
Her current doctor, Paul Robinson, of the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, spoke this week about the troubling battle Howard has had with the company.

One must read charts and figure the history or the patient but sounds like this is not just anorexia which is why I suggested full restraints but one cannot just order restraints 24/7. It's illegal. So I would think this patient has much more issues than just anorexia nervosa but I retired a decade ago.
Healthcare just the way the left likes it.

Right. Karen’s mother was a piece of work — a dictator whose “pet” was Richard. Richard was no day at the beach, either. Both of them controlled her. Poor thing.

And Cass Elliott (another exceptional voice, if not Karen Carpenter class) died because she did eat a sandwich.
A nice FR report on her from a few years back. And more details than I'd ever known about her case from that piece's beautiful source in The Guardian. By far the best and most interesting thing I've ever read from that normally liberal Brit rag.
They’re not trying to save her life. They’re trying to make a buck. That is, in fact, the very subject of the story - where those bucks are going to come from.
I know that you would rather do that.
But that wasn't my question.
My question is, should the payment of medical bills with other people's money, collected through taxation, be subject to regulation by elected representatives of the people paying for it, or not? Yes, or no?
Right now, we have no budget and have not had one for years, because no one can say no to anything anyone wants. This will not continue.
Either there will be a global budget as in the UK, or there will be a case-by-case analysis of value.
What there will not be is borrowing another $20 trillion based on what you or anyone else would rather be done, unless of course you are willing to pay for your desired outcome out of your own funds.
Some people cannot be saved. Sad but true.

you could take this young woman and tie her down, force a tube down her throat and feed her or put a tube in her belly against her will and feed her that way, or place large IV catheters into her chest and give her TPN...all the while her hands must be restrained so she can't pull at them...

I’ve been watching the show “My 600-lb Life,” and eating disorders, no matter which side of the spectrum, have definite mental and emotional components to it.
I’ve also noticed that both sides of the spectrum have enablers, who deny that nothing is wrong and continue to feed the habit. Someone can sit there on camera, unable to move on their own, crying that they’re going to “die any day now” if they don’t change - followed by a 3000 calorie meal provided by their enabler(s).
What are you reading? I wrote everything would have to be ordered by a doc or a judge. If you’re angry at something I wrote then I don’t know what it is. My posts are what MIGHT have to be done but again a doc or court order would have to do that. Restraints from as I remember would have to be re evaluated every two hours and I don’t even know if they have a right to do that anyway. Again what are you po’ed about? Something maybe you read wrong?

She thinks she’s fat, when she looks in the mirror she sees a fat woman.
My experience is that not all anorexics starve themselves because they think they are fat or because of body image messages from the media. The underlying drive is self-starvation and they may tack some "reasons" on to explain that. Sometimes it is associated with a sense of control and willpower. This sense of control often extends to elaborate deception to defeat attempts to help them.
I’d rather help her get better, save her life
The trouble is that while there are programs that claim to help anorexia, and may do so for a time, there is not really a cure because the exact cause in terms of brain function and genetics is not fully understood.
Force feed her twinkies.
But only if she loses five more pounds.
....and mock them for being grossly obese.

My daughter had anorexia. We were blessed to live 20 minutes from a GREAT eating disorder place. Many of the people (mostly teen girls) being treated there were from out-of-state and Alaska. They had in-patient, out-patient, and even a hospital-like setup for the seriously ill.
My daughter was an out-patient, and was in no-way interested in the program, thought it was stupid, etc. BUT - she was fairly compliant, and followed the program. After about a year she was okay. Some of the gals were still there, or would “graduate”, and then relapse. Really sad. Our insurance didn’t cover it, but we were just so thankful that she got the help she needed.
One of our “homework assignments” was to watch a youtube of a male comedian that had an eating disorder. He was okay now, but even when he was sick (or whatever you want to call it) - he would joke about it in his routines. “And you wouldn’t believe the amount of times that after a show, some gal would come up to me afterwards with her left-over dinner or sandwich. ‘Oh here honey - you need this more than I do - and it’s SOOOO delicious!”
The place we went to is called “The Eating Recovery Center” near Seattle. I see on their website that they have centers all around the country. I can’t say enough about how good they were in treating her disorder.
