In a statement Thursday, Amazon confirmed the woman's private conversation had been inadvertently recorded and sent. It says the device interpreted a word in the background conversation as "Alexa" — a command that makes the machine wake up — and then it interpreted the conversation as a "send message" request. The company says it is "evaluating options to make this case even less likely."

I was talking to a friend in front of his TV, and the subject of our conversation “the closed pizza place”, suddenly appeared on the TV’s menu as an advertisement with the comment “looking for Closed Pizza?” with a selection of pizza shops. We figured that the new Comcast voice capable remote had been snooping even though he had deliberately deactivated the voice feature. The remote was quickly crushed to a powder.
Burn it all with fire!
Separate your usage on 3 or more computers.
One browses the web.
One never connects to the web.
Password security file never connects to web. Etc.
Entertainment and video nearly dedicated, connects to web.
NEVER use one computer for all work convenient or not.
In "settings" go to location and click to disable it. Be sure you don't give any apps location permission.
Nothing like paying for your own personal stalker.

I just checked the phone. I got to settings, then location.
I don’t see a place to disable. It says location method as high accuracy. Is it maybe in Google location history or Google location sharing?
Pulling the battery disables GPS.
Now you can’t pull the battery.
I just got to thinking and maybe I will leave the locator on.
I am 71 and not in the best of health. If I phoned 911 and wasn’t certain of my location, maybe they could locate me through the phone.
What about our phones. Technically, they could listen to us when we’re not aware.

I hate giving up freedom for security.
Especially security I don’t trust.
I had a childhood friend named Alexa. These devices probably get her into all sorts of awkward situations.

Well as someone else mentioned, I can always remove the battery. It is really easy on my phone. Just pry off the back with a fingernail then just lift the battery out.

It’s really hard to find a phone these days with a removable battery. It’s the two main feature for which I looked when I got my last phone. (Other was unlocked).
Mine wasn’t. Husband gave me a 10” Fire for my birthday, complete with case and some sort of warranty. I know it was more than $49.
Mine is a Samsung Galaxy J7. It is a pretty standard looking phone. Mine was less expensive than most.
My Daughter and Son-in-Law each have Apple phones which cost $800. They don’t look much different from mine. I can’t think of anything I would like my phone to do that this one doesn’t.
