There are a series of "booms" spaced a few seconds apart that go on for the full 8 minutes of the recording. She also hears what she describes as a metallic rotating sound. Weird. Any ideas?

Sounds like gun shots.

I hear sounds like that all the time in my area. Always lots of target practice going on.

Strange things can happen with acoustics when there are low clouds like that.

People get all worked up over simple things sometimes.

Gun Fire! No mystery here.

Except that the sounds seem to be spaced at precise intervals.

Just timing it in my head I come up with about 6 sec between "shots". The precise timing seems a bit odd but you're right they do sound like gun shots. Add to that, the lady implies the sounds coming from different directions, still about 6 seconds apart.

...

I bet that’s different from the sound of wet grass.

“Except that the sounds seem to be spaced at precise intervals.”

Yeah, that was odd. That and the fact that it goes on for over 8 minutes.

Hail suppression cannon for the booms, not sure about the whistling noise.

Ah, I bet you’re right. It fits with what I found when I searched “hail suppression cannons”. I’d never heard of them.

I was thinking geese suppression cannon, but those are usually spaced further apart.

I wonder if that whistling noise is made by some sort of projectile cutting through the air after being fired from the cannon?

I had never heard of “hail suppression cannons” either -- had to look 'em up.

An interesting note from Wikipedia:

all manufacturers unanimously agree that the area of effect of their device is only 100 to 200 square meters directly above.

Given that serious hail is usually propagated by severe thunderstorms, what are the odds the hail will fall straight down? Remember, the volume it forms in is many thousands of feet up... (In fact, in a hailstorm I was in, in Kansas, windows well under the eaves of the house were smashed by large hail -- some hail ended up IN the house.)

I rather highly doubt these things can disrupt hail formation anyway.

She said "circling". Hail cannons placed around an orchard would each fire on a fixed period and several would be dispersed around an orchard.

Locally farmers use propane cannons to scare birds from newly seeded fields. For a day or two it sounds like downtown Baghdad.

Off in the distance there is a conversation going:

High 12 ft, left 8

High 6,right 4...

The metallic whirling may be a 30 cal projectile below 1000fps.

I don’t buy target practice. This is rhythmic, every 5 or 6 seconds for over 8 minutes. Nobody shoots like that without melting a barrel.

You're either not buying the right firearms or have never dove hunted or shot prairie dogs.
