A Minnesota grandmother who was wanted over the shooting deaths of her husband and a woman has been arrested in Texas near the US-Mexico border.

Lois Riess, 56, has been on the run ever since her husband David Riess was found shot dead at their home in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, on March 23. Her second alleged victim, Pamela Hutchinson, was found dead at her condo in Fort Meyers Beach in Florida on April 9.

A US Marshals Service statement says two federal deputy marshals arrested Riess Thursday night around 8.30pm at a South Padre Island, Texas, restaurant.

Not a very bright criminal, yet it’s a miracle she didn’t make it to Mexico.
I think I read elsewhere the murdered woman’s car was spotted - everybody knows you should at least change out the plates, preferably steal another vehicle when fleeing.
But her gambling addiction probably addled her brain and made her lazy.

The odds were against her the whole time, but I guess she hadn’t figured that out.

One difference between gambling addicts and most substance abuse addicts is that the latter, by and large, have great time management skills. If granny had planned her caper instead of just acting out, she'd have gone to Florida, killed her first victim (if that killing was indeed for ID theft, rather than some score-settling crap, love-triangle, etc), made all her escape plans in the stolen ID, then returned to Minnesota, done a much better job of concealing her husband's murder, and made her getaway, with some days to spare before his murder was uncovered, and well before her Florida crime was connected with her. Thanks sodpoodle.

It was not a good sign for her when she had to ask directions to get out of Iowa. Iowa is a very square state, geographically speaking.

So much for gambling being a victimless crime.

She’s not too smart. It was all over the news she was there a couple days earlier. Anyone with two brain cells would have left the area pronto if not high tailed it to another state. But then criminals usually aren’t the brightest bulbs on the Christmas tree.
