Authorities in Florida are asking for help after a gopher tortoise was found earlier this week covered in red spray paint and with concrete on its limbs.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release on Wednesday that two people came across the tortoise on County Road 455 in the town of Montverde, located about 30 miles west of Orlando. The pair then took it to a wildlife rehabber.
“It’s just very upsetting,” Kim Titterington, who runs Swamp Girl Adventures, told FOX35.
Titterington said volunteers have been able to get the tortoise about 70 percent cleaned up after gently chipping away concrete and attempting to get the red paint off. There is still a significant amount of paint on the face and skin of the reptile, and the concrete is still causing issues on its underside.

Gopher tortoises are a protected species. Central Florida was rife with them into the70s. Hardly ever see them now.

I saw this on the news last night. My first thought was it was accidental. Sh*t happens... red paint, cement, sounds like it crawled through something and got spilled on.
Just to show how decent people can be to wildlife, several months ago I saw a box turtle trying to cross a heavily traveled two lane road I was driving along, stopped to allow it to cross and all the driver in the oncoming lane did the same. It made the crossing successfully.

I have no problem with people killing ducks, geese, and turtles and eating them. Gratuitous cruelty is another matter entirely.
