April 17, SATURDAY. On my way up stopped at Estey’s factory to hear a first-class organ just completed and destined for some Presbyterian conventicle at San Francisco. . . .* Our big party is to be Monday night, and I fear it will prove dreary.

* Jacob Estey (1814-1890), after creating a successful organ factory at Brattleboro, had placed a branch agency in New York.

I’m interested in Anaik Timor the Sorceress, but I don’t have time to dig in right now.

A little known provision of the Leavenworth Constitution would have extended the local practice within the city limits of foregoing turn signals to include the entire state. This was a very progressive measure since turn signals had not yet been invented. Unfortunately, the Leavenworth Constitution failed, but the practice of driving without turn signals within the city limits continues to this very day.

It would be fun to go back in time to this party to experience how New York society entertained in the 1850’s.

Maybe.

I wonder how aware they were in the 1800’s that in living in America in the 1800’s, they were living in one of the freest centuries the world had ever known. I would have loved just to have spent some time in that period where the feds were around 5% of the GDP, the average American was better off than any average citizen in the world, and government was not at all part of daily thinking or life. A time where you could truly “breathe free” regardless of not having our modern conveniences.

Niblo’s refers to Niblo’s Garden theater. The wedding guest beating his breast on hearing the last bassoon comes from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

We read about Felice Orsini and his attempt to assassinate Napoleon III in the March 6 issue of Harper’s Weekly (pages 14-16). There will be a follow up story about the execution of two of the plotters in a later issue.
