A nine-month-old dog that weighs 12 stone (180lb) and stands six-foot-tall (1.8m) may be the world's biggest puppy.

Enormous Euphrates was bred to replicate a prehistoric canine species and eats an impressive eight cups of dog food a day.

Owner Jared Howser, 41, of Salt Lake City, Utah, said onlookers often confuse his puppy for a fully-grown adult.

He said: 'At nine months there simply isn't another dog 180lbs and 31.5 inches to withers anywhere else in the world, she is an anomaly.

Knew somebody who had one as a pet. Said they had to wear heavy gloves just to give it a bath.

Never show fear. Dogs can smell it.

Gotta love the big pups. They love full body contact rough housing and I love to give it to them. But you have to be the boss. And they have to know it.
You have to be alpha pup. And dogs are looking for your leaderships.

You just know that a bunch of gangbangers are going to turn them into fighting dogs.

The poor dog will likely have hip dysplasia and other skeletal issues and will very likely only live a few years. The big dogs are considered old well before 10, whereas the teeny ones routinely live past 16.

It looks like a Neapolitan Mastiff. I have seen those at dog shows that were 165 lbs.

Not sure how the article handles the ancient breed dying out "7,000 years ago" with it being used by the Roman army to run under and gut enemy horses, but to your point somebody must have photo shopped out the drool strings. Those jowls should produce a Niagara Falls stream of goo.

Yep.
Few of the dogs over 120 pounds seldom seem to make it too long.

There was an old cartoon showing two boys confronting a large possibly dangerous dog. One boy told the other to remain calm because dogs can smell fear. Other boy says “I’m pretty sure this one can because i just messed my pants”.

The unknown question is: How vicious was the temperament of the ancient breed?

I have heard the most vicious breed of dog is the Chihuahua.

I think they are the most untrainable.

They think they are the meanest and biggest dogs on the block!

Years ago, I bought an Irish Wolfhound puppy. I have a picture of him at 9 months standing in front of a kitchen counter. Assuming a standard 36" height for the counter, he was 31-32 inches at the withers (although no where near 180 pounds). He was 10-12" taller than his 6-month picture taken at the same location. As an adult, he was measured using hound sticks at 36 3/8" at the withers. Puppies, like kids, can sometimes sprout up quickly and then stall out.

It is entirely possible that this dog won't get substantially taller despite her young age.

American Molosser. Seriously the world’s biggest mastiff.

And this is only a puppy and she’s like already h-u-u-g-e!

Can you or someone else please tell me the purpose of those big floppy jowls? I always wondered what the benefit of those were. I know most of the odder features of certain breeds have a purpose related to the job they’re bred for.

Impressive, but nowhere near the size of this cross-breed lion/tiger:

Like mudflaps deflecting water spray, those jowls are for when the dog kills and eats his keeper, the blood doesn’t get splattered everywhere.

“sometimes the bigger the critter the more docile they can be...”

I had an acquaintance who had a 200+lb Mastif. Big slobbering sweatheart who would lean against you and pin you to the car while you scratched his ears.

Dysplasia and other skeletal issues that may occur in various breeds are most typically a result of both genetics but amplified by over exercise at a young age their skeletal growth lasts longer than other dogs. I have had and raised Great Danes where the sire may typically be 34-36” at the shoulder and I was told by breeders and Veterinarians of removing the tendency to over activate them in the growth cycle until their bones became solid.

Danes, Shepherds and others can carry forth through breeding and not paying attention to bloodlines. This is why many breeders (not puppy mills) are importing new Sires and Dams as the family lineage is more diverse and the tendency of genetic inheritance because of overbreeding is mitigated.

Personally I love big dogs and have also worked with Cane Corso and other large dogs and adhere to the same principles of slow activity programs as well as nutrition i.e. non processed foods, fresh meats (raw) and other practices that reduce or eliminate other issues such as body structure. Danes and others have a V shaped body cavity and with the stomach at the base feeding foods that when liquid is added swell and when the stomach moves around it can twist (gastric torsion) and close off the front and back of the stomach and then you are really in trouble.

I would love to have one of these dogs and apply the more natural feeding and care of them as I know from experience when you do it is better for them and is what they would experience in nature.
