Oscar Ratings Down, Eye All-Time Low In Early Estimates

Last night’s ceremony drew a 18.9 Live+Same Day rating in the metered market households. That was off 16% from last year’s 22.4 rating, which was a nine-year low. The 18.9 appears to be an all-time low for the Oscars, below the previous low ratings point for the Oscars, logged with the 2008 telecast (21.9), hosted by Jon Stewart, when No Country For Old Men won Best Picture.

Twenty years ago, the nominees were big hit movies like Titanic, As Good as it Gets, Good Will Hunting and LA Confidential.

Now? A bunch of art house films that no one has seen or cares about.

Here's the problem: Academy members are voting for films that relatively few Americans see in theatrical release. Even movies more "friendly" to conservatives like Dunkirk and The Darkest Hour were not widely distributed theatrically.
