The results, published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, showed the patients could be separated into five distinct clusters.
Cluster 1 - severe autoimmune diabetes is broadly the same as the classical type 1 - it hit people when they were young, seemingly healthy and an immune disease left them unable to produce insulin
Cluster 2 - severe insulin-deficient diabetes patients initially looked very similar to those in cluster 1 - they were young, had a healthy weight and struggled to make insulin, but the immune system was not at fault
Cluster 3 - severe insulin-resistant diabetes patients were generally overweight and making insulin but their body was no longer responding to it
Cluster 4 - mild obesity-related diabetes was mainly seen in people who were very overweight but metabolically much closer to normal than those in cluster 3
Cluster 5 - mild age-related diabetes patients developed symptoms when they were significantly older than in other groups and their disease tended to be milder

There is also a lot of variability in susceptibility to diabetic complications. There are patients who are tightly controlled, but still wind up with retinopathy, kidney disease, neuropathy, etc., while others who are poorly controlled wind up escaping all complications.

Personally I’m gonna demand my own group. Why don’t we see groups defined by gender choices or racial victim classes? Clearly this list is compiled by a Hater.

I couldn’t tell from the article how 3, 4 and 5 are different other than by degree. 1, 2 and the final 3 all have different mechanisms so I could see three types, but not 5 types.
The degree of body metabolism. Group 3 has more severe metabolism problems therefore “diet and exercise” doesn’t work and neither does medicines. Moderate exercise has no effect on weight loss either. So it is the severity and group 5 tends to be later in life.
I would add another group based on personal experience. Type II diabetics who are a result of a damaged pancreas.
No cluster V?
I’m not going to bother to read the article. Some progress is good, but it’s not enough.
Diabetes is a group of symptoms, not a disease. Doctors dont understand this. Hence most people have nothing but hyperbole in their quiver.
“Diabetes” is one foot in the grave. It should be taken much more seriously at the earliest symptoms.
Hope for the day that a vaccine against diabetes will become available.
One should never stuff a carbohydrate in their face if they are type 2.
That’s icing the cake.
The first person to review the early first draft of my book unknowingly adopted my methodology and contacted me a year later, telling me that he’d gotten the blood test results from his doctor for his latest physical.
Without regard for my position on cholesterol (another discussion): His doctor - noting his associated weight loss and overall well-being combined with his labs - took him off of his high blood pressure meds, pre-diabetes meds and statin meds, telling him, “Whatever you’re doing, keep it up!”
I’ve read dozens & dozens of stories of people reversing their “diseases” on their own in the wake of the failure of modern medicine; I know it to be true but do not assert my method will reverse “disease”...a bone of contention for those seeking marketing advantage (I’m being intentionally vague).
Here’s the punchline: Not a single person I’ve spoken to since believes my story, the truth of my methodology or finds his & my own results compelling enough to change anything about their lifestyle.
This resulted in a 4th volume and a rewrite of the parent publication.
Few here or elsewhere will accept my conclusions once published, but - ironically - that’s to be expected.
That final statement will make sense when I complete the 4th volume...a corollary elaborating on the persistence of impaired health.
