The Race Is on to Save Disney's Classic (But Fading) Cartoons
BBC ^ | 2/20

Original drawings from Disney cartoons like Alice in Wonderland and Snow White could soon be lost to fading and decay.

The individual hand-painted sheets that were used to make the films have become distorted and cracked over time.

The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) is working with Disney to try to save the beloved pictures that led to some of the world's most iconic animations.

They have been analysing the sheets, known as cels, to find out their composition and how to restore them.

British scientist Tom Learner, of the GCI, has been quoted as saying that Walt Disney himself was an "unusual man" because of the way he kept a collection of his work.

Digitize them already.

What is the problem?

Some of the older animation cels are acetate based and have yellowed with time, others are brittle, some have the paint flaking off.
They need to stabilize the acetate on some, others have turned to almost a translucent putty and those are unrecoverable at this time.

As I were, nitrate film.
Used up until the 1950’s, flammable, acidic because it is nitrocellulose/nitric acid.

The list of lost films, not at all comprehensive, has quite a few entries from the 1930’s.
Interesting subject, I’m not well versed on it as you can see by my acetate instead of nitrate film goof.

Yeah, this article is bogus and leaving out a lot information. Of course Disney has preserved every scrap they can. There is something else that was supposed to be conveyed, but wasn’t, due to shitty reporting by fake news outlets.

As with any older painted item they must be cleaned before having anything done to them. Film, fading, color matching.....it is restoration work at its hardest

They are whining about preserving the “magical” originals. I have news for them, stuff gets old and falls apart. When the Mona Lisa becomes unviewable, there will be plenty of high resolution images available.

The extra copies Leonardo made up for Captain Tancredi/Count Scarlioni would help.

It’s a vintage Dr.Who reference but I couldn’t resist.

Animation like that and some of the stuff I’ve seen on Futurama is The Bomb! I hate it when I hear people try to marginalize it by calling it “cartoons”. But I’m supposed to love their stupid emojis? Go figure!

The Red Skelton archive burned long ago. Fierce fire. A lot of really funny stuff gone forever.

It would be no loss to lose the modern “comedy” crap.
Skelton knew how to do it, the loss of his work is... Younger generations haven’t a clue about good comedy.

Younger generations haven’t a clue about many things. But, they’ll tell us all what to do about life.
