We keep hearing about NBC's ratings problems, as we see in this report:
At the halfway point of the XXIII Winter Olympics, things are certainly feeling a little chilly for both Team USA and NBC.
As last night's primetime coverage displayed, even with the surprise silver in the short-track speedskating that John-Henry Krueger scored, both the medal count for America's athletes and the ratings for the broadcaster are struggling to gain traction in the PyeongChang games.
Currently, Team USA is in sixth place with 10 overall medals, just behind the Russian competitors, and tied for third in gold medals with Canada's haul of five. As for the Comcast-owned broadcaster, the 2018 Olympics needs a miracle on ice or two to escape being the lowest rated and least watched games ever.
Wow, who saw that coming?
On Sunday, we usually get together for lunch with a bunch of other couples. Naturally, we spoke about the Olympics and the games on TV.
I am not suggesting that this is a scientific survey, but this is what I heard:
1) Why are U.S. athletes telling us about their politics? We don't want to hear it. Shut up and do whatever you went to the Olympics to do. I see a huge backlash against Hollywood and professional athletes over the focus on politics.
2) No U.S. hockey team worth watching. Frankly, this is my reason for not watching. In prior games, the hockey was top-notch. The U.S.-Canada game was superb the last few times. We miss NHL players, although I understand why the owners did not want to interrupt the season.
3) Too much stuff that has nothing to do with sports. Too many background stories, and the treatment of Kim's little sister was just way over the top.

I watch the hockey games. Those are fun.
We are not a winter sport country , we love baseball, basketball, and football, not the luge and skiing
The Olympics have become creepy and weird. Can’t think of any reason to be terribly interested in them.
There are too many figure skating events, for one thing.
Three of the athletes get a mention in the latest Hitler Rant -— HITLER RANTS ABOUT THE TRUMP CURSE http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3633307/posts
Johnny needs to add a ‘d’ to the end of his name.
With half the country feeling one way, and the other half feeling the other way, I just don’t understand why these divisive topics aren’t seen as poison by the bean counters.
It used to be: “Here are some people skating. Hope you like it.”
(And a lot of people did.)
But now it’s: “Here are some homosexuals, and one of them despises Vice President Pence and he also hates Christians because they’re stinky and guns are bad should all be banned — but anyway, hope you like the skating!”
And viewership is down? How strange.
It seems like half the events are “free style” something or other. I watched the snowboarding, even though I like the board racing much better. I ignored the freestyle skiing. If they have freestyle bobsledding (not counting the Germans crashing their sled at the finish) I’ll watch it. But enough flipping and judging.
The media isn't in the entertainment or news business, they are in the activist liberal propaganda business - and they feel they're doing a great job because they are.
Well, that’s absolutely right. I just wish the public could discern it. As a business model, it makes no sense. Therefore, it’s not a business model. It’s a political action plan.
Hard to watch when recreational sports like snowboarding and X games sports like half pipe have announcers speaking in modern jive that most don’t understand.....180 half mctwist with a front side fakie.....
Don’t care to watch Lindsay Vonn considering she skiing for herself apparently.
On Friday they showed about six hours of curling which was brutal.
Just not the same. The downhill was always hard but graceful. Bobsled was country versus country, not sled one versus sled three. Ice skating was, well boring to me, but not used as some platform to promote the individual but the country.
Plus the announcers are overbearing. Like listing non-stop to Moose Johnston.
It started in bits and pieces in the 70’ when I was offended by the bad language, skin and other smut which was being force fed to me by the media and magazines, music, etc.
Bit by bit I have habituated my self to do without all of it. Where is it written that I must permit these philistines to corrupt me or my consciousness just because they CAN.
Well-to the extent that they CAN'T, I have assured myself that they DON'T... I don't buy their tickets, subscriptions, etc. or permit them access to ME or my consciousness in any way I can control!
Even at the doctor's office I WILL NOT bother with those trash publications ... NOPE!
I'M in charge of the inside of my head and it's NOT A GARBAGE CAN in there-thank you very much!!
By NOW- I consume very little of their slop!
Then there's that little prayer.....Thank you God for my non-daring sons and my non-athletic daughter.
Additionally to throw in a dog advocate post..they torture and slaughter hundreds of thousands of dogs in horrifically brutal ways in South Korea.
Hate that country and their brutal sadism.
The torture is deliberate as they believe the meat will taste better. I think of them as the three B's. Beating, Blowtorching, and Boiling.
I am currently attempting to save a puppy from a butcher in South Korea, btw, so please keep your fingers crossed for it.
If it can escape being thrown in a pot of boiling water to make soup I am bringing it here and naming it Soop.
I've been saying that for yrs...
however, I used to like the Olympics, this yr its a turnoff and my schedule just seems to be hit and with the Olympics...but I hate watching things that are not shown completely LIVE..not taped...
pop culture should be called Poop culture, which is what it is..
As long as athletes insist on insulting their audience and the sports casters insist on screeching with exaggerated theatrical hilarity and ignorance, their product is too boring and annoying to watch.
I got tired of the Olympic hype 30 or 40 years ago. The only reason to watch by the 1980’s was to root for the U.S. against the evil Rooskies. But then the Cold War ended and the Games lost their last glimmer of interest. Basically, I don’t like the over-hyped, once every four years format. Most of the sports can have, and many do have, an annual world championship. There is no reason to elevate one competition every four years to some mythical status. It’s all about attracting television audiences, not the athletes or the sport.
There is so much never ending gay gay gay that they should just award gold silver and bronze felching straws instead of medals
Every anything figure skating or ice dancing gets turned off for the night. Personal profiles, channel change. Personal profiles of athletes who are more about their same-sex issues than their sport, off for the night.
I made that same comment years ago to my wife who used to dive in high school. My chest still hurts where she hit me.
