Her best friend was mysteriously killed. This selfie held the clue police needed.

A passerby stumbled upon the 18-year-old woman’s body on the side of the road, not far from the Saskatoon, Sask., landfill.

Brittney Gargol’s strangled body was cold to the touch, according to the man who found her there just after 5 a.m. on March 25, 2015. Gargol did not have shoes on, the CBC reports, and beside her body was a belt. But it would be two years before Canadian police would identify and arrest the suspect in the mysterious death — and a selfie posted on Facebook just hours before Gargol’s death was key to unraveling the mystery, the CBC reports.

Gargol’s best friend, Cheyenne Rose Antoine, now 21, told police that the pair had been out together at a house party that night until Antoine decided to leave to go see an uncle...

“Where are you?” Antoine wrote on Facebook later in the night, the StarPhoenix reports. “Haven’t heard from you. Hope you made it home safe.” Antoine’s uncle confirmed to police that Antoine had split up with Gargol to visit him that night, the newspaper reports. When police saw the selfie the pair of friends had posted earlier in the night, though, it provided investigators with a clue they needed...

In the picture, Antoine was wearing a black belt — the same one that was uncovered at the crime scene, police said. And the belt was the murder weapon, according to prosecutors.

“It’s quite remarkable how the police developed this information,” prosecutor Robin Ritter said Monday in court, according to the newspaper.

The belt made Antoine a suspect, and she was arrested and charged with second degree murder. On Monday, she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, and was sentenced to seven years in prison, CKOM reports.

So you strangle someone and it can plead as only “manslaughter” rather than murder???

Strangulation with a belt would seem to be an ironclad case of intentional homicide, i.e., murder. You can’t do it accidentally.

In California you can murder somebody, plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and get sentenced to 18 years, which means you are out of prison in 9 years. It happens all the time.

Strangle your friend to death, and you get 7 years?

Strangling isn’t a crime of impulse, done in a regrettable 2 second flash. It isn’t fast like in the movies. Some old fashioned cop or MMA chokehold might knock you unconscious quickly. But to kill, it’s a 2, 3 or even 4 minutes of hard constant choking the living crap out of someone. Same with drowning.

If a man had done that to another man, he’d get 15 years. If a man has done to a woman, he’d get at least 23 years.

There is no equality.

Make sure you are tried in San Francisco. Guaranteed, by the time the trial is over, you'll be reduced to "time served". Helps if you are a Mexican national here illegally.

You know the old joke. A person walking through the neighborhood one evening looks up and sees a neighbor standing naked before an open window with the curtains open.
Which one gets arrested?

It depends. You can’t know if it’s a peeping Tom case, or an indecent exposure case till you know which one is the woman and which is the male.

You're right. The Criminal Justice system in this country leaves a lot to be desired too. Too many times, perps are offered deals by prosecutors in order to forego a trial. A large majority never do the time for the actual crime they've committed. I know...I worked in NY's prison system for 25 years. Victims, and their families rarely get the justice they deserve.

She plead to manslaughter, Prosecutor got her in jail. Maybe they had a weak case, so gave her that offer.

Reminds me of a friend of a friend. Was 22 years old, and charged with child molestation. Prosecutor offered a deal if he admitted guilt, he would get 20 years in the clink. But for whatever he was accused of, he would get life if found guilty in a trial.

I have no idea if the guy was guilty or not. He said he was not guilty, and wanted to take it to trial. So he did. Jury found him guilty, and so he is currently serving life behind bars.

Again, no idea if he truly was guilty or not. But he made a potentially 35 year decision, and lost.
