I remember working on a 95-foot tug making passage to Kotzebue from Kodiak. No barge, and a full load of diesel. We got knocked around pretty good pushing through head seas out of Kodiak our first night. And then we got caught in a bad storm after passing Scotch Cap lighthouse.

I woke up for my morning wheel watch to find our cook sitting in the galley pale as a ghost and telling me he wasn't cooking today. I asked him why and he jerked his thumb towards the a porthole. I looked out and saw a wall of black marble so steep I had to press my face against the glass to get a look at the top of that wave.

The view from the wheelhouse was worse. We had 30-foot seas on our starboard quarter (our wheelhouse was 15 feet above the waterline) and the boat was swinging her stern around like Britney Spears in a music video. I spent the next four hours fighting to keep us from broaching and running for my life. When I knocked off my watch, I went to my bunk convinced I was not going to wake up on this plane of existence. Not terror, just past that.

I was pleasantly surprised to wake up still alive. That's a good feeling. I'd sailed for years on larger ships before that voyage and had weathered typhoons and other nasty storms. But when we got to the tug's home port, I signed off that damn boat and swore to God that I would never- I mean never- work a towboat in Alaska again.

This lady doesn't know crap about what real sailing is.

They want to keep everyone in a constant state of fear.

Good book. “State Of Fear”. Michael Crichton tour de force about the BS of the Global Warming crowd. It described how the left is lying about climate change And Crichton died young soon after its release. You wonder why?

All we got in the Navy on a destroyer was crackers and peanut butter for midrats.

I’m convinced Ray Stevens got the inspiration for Guitar-zan from Popsicles/Icicles. It’s where they sing ....

He loves bright stars and guitars and something or other.
They blurred guitars into ‘and,’ giving guitarzan.

Steven’s song came out a year or two later.
