I might be tired. Are you sure 66" divide 12" is 5'6"? I even tried my calculator and it said, 5'5". Maybe it's broken.☺

Unfortunately, it happens all the time and as a general rule it’s the pits and it’s ugly.

Btw, I’ve been bitten twice in my time, and both were smaller dogs. But on the other hand, that was easily survivable...With pits, not so much.

My cousin had to get rid of their Rottweiler dog they were keeping as the insurance company refused to cover them / rates would be too high.

I see actress Kaley Cuoco in a commercial to take in stray animals and she hugs some pit bull type dog. Just a matter of time before that bomb goes off.

“To me, this is just plain stupidity.”

It does serve to weed out those who aren’t serious about responsibly owning a pit.

This man drives a pickup truck everywhere. Three of his pits are his constant companions, riding in the bed.
If he stops at the store he puts the dogs in the cab. They never bark or cause a fuss unless someone fools with the truck, then they bark their heads off.
I have never heard of one of his dogs biting someone.

One of my uncles bred and trained German Shepherds for show.
He went through the same problem when the shepherd hysteria was in full swing.
Irresponsible breeders, sellers and owners caused that period of hysteria.
People wanted aggressive guard dogs and the breeders and sellers gave them what they wanted.

After the Shepherd craze people latched onto the Chow Chow as an aggressive guard dog.
Remember when Chow Chows were considered the demon dog of the day?

Now its pits.
Unfortunately society has degraded and a segment of society wants MEAN dogs.
Unscrupulous breeders and sellers have obliged.
Individual owners have intentionally bred for meaner and meaner dogs.

Labs are nice dogs.
I prefer Beagles myself.
Collies are nice as well.
Even labs, collies and beagles can be turned mean under the wrong circumstances.

I believe anyone should be able to own any dog they want, but they need to be responsible owners. That includes proper training of the owner and dog.
Until owners are held responsible financially and criminally mean dog breeds will come and go.

Just wait until wolf/dog breeds become popular.

I've had German Shepherds all my life. What do ya mean shepherd hysteria?

And are you suggesting German Shepherds are a, "Mean dog breed" in the same category as pit bulls?

Your calc is ONLY giving feet. You came up with 5-1/2 feet - 5.5 ft. NOT the same as 5foot-5inches.

It’s dang close though - 5foot-6inches - 5’6”

He’s saying when GS were called vicious dogs and everyone was scared of them (movies, etc). But that was brief. Chows still hardly anyone heard of. But the truth is we’ve been tailing PBTs for 30 years; it’s not a fad. The fad is considering them to be victims of prejudice. The type is more popular than in the ‘80s as their martyrdom increased, but still not nearly as popular as Rotties (#2 on the attack list) or German Shepherds (down lower, and extremely popular for the last century, possibly the all-time popular dog). Yet, the type (not just one breed) is by far the biggest attacker and killer amongst all dogs.

It was 45 or more years ago.
There was a string of stories about GS attacking people, especially kids.
Shepherds were constantly in the news.
People were talking about them the same way they are talking about pits now.
This was before the internet or USA Today.
It may have just been a Virginia thing or maybe just regional but there was talk about GS being “demon” dogs that shouldn’t be kept by normal people.

A German Shepherd is a fine dog, I love their looks and coloring.
In my experience with my uncles dogs I found them to be very intelligent, loyal and well trained.
When I went to his house we would play with his dogs and never worry.
It was funny because we had to watch my aunts Chihuahua closer than any of his shepherds.

Good. Shepherds are great dogs.
My neighbor has an Australian shepherd that is playful as all get out.
Only problem is in his exuberance to play he can knock you down.
That fella is hefty. And shaggy.

If I was going to get another dog I would consider a GS if the pound had one.

“Are you suggesting German Shepherds are a, “Mean dog breed” in the same category as pit bulls?”

I’m not, but at one time I remember them being placed in the mean dog category.
IIRC it was back in the mid 60’s.

I recall being at the hospital when a boy, age 7 or 8, was brought in. His face had been mangled pretty good by a dog. The talk was it had been a GS.
IIRC some people wanted them as aggressive guard dogs. Not a lot of people, but some.
Probably the same types who these days want aggressive pits.

Part of the problem was the WWII movies were very popular and the NAZI guards were always shown with barking, snarling Shepherds ready to pounce on the prisoners.
Public perception and all that.

Public pressure led locals to abandon the GS as a pet.
I don’t understand it because in my experience they were great dogs.

As I said, if I were looking for another dog I would consider a GS without qualms.

“Devil Dog: the Hound of Hell”. Scary movie of the ‘70s with GS as the perp.

But in the ‘70s Dobes really took over as the evil dog.

I agree on the movies.
I gave up watching movies with my wife if they were about historic people or events. So loaded with misinformation as to be unwatchable.
But we have to admit that tv and movies have done much to shape public perception over the decades.
