Brilliant Light Over SoCal Skies After SpaceX Launches Rocket From Vandenberg Air Force Base
KTLA ^ | 12/22/2017

KTLA began receiving numerous phone calls shortly after 5:30 p.m., when a brilliant flash of light -- somewhat resembling a jellyfish-like creature -- appeared in the night sky....

Multiple local law enforcement agencies have confirmed the flash of light was from the rocket launch, which blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base along California's Central Coast. SpaceX livestreamed it on Facebook.

Vandenberg Air Force Base announced earlier this week the launch was set for 5:27 p.m. Friday from Space Launch Complex-4. The base said it was the “fourth Iridium mission consisting of 10 satellites on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.”

Saw it from Mesa, AZ, east of Phoenix. Been many years since I’ve caught one. Has to be launched near sunset so the setting sun’s light highlights the plume and trail. Pretty neat.

From Dana Point it was impressive.

Could see the booster separate and burn back to the landing barge.

After watching this on so many videos, an early Christmas present.

As if missile launches early evening were such a rare thing?

Were it possible, they would all be launched about this time. The setting sun catching the missile trail up in the outer region of the atmosphere is so cool.

...

They did a controlled landing in the water this time. No barge. It was the second and last use of this first stage. It was an older model.

In 1986, I saw a spectacular missile launch from Vandenberg while driving on Rte. 1 in Malibu. I pulled over to listen for any noise it might be making, but heard none.

Then I turned on the radio. I figured that if Vera Lynn's 1953 hit We'll Meet Again were playing, the missile was coming this way from the other side of the world. But Michael Jackson or one of the pop stars of the day was playing, so everything was all right.

I sometimes wonder if We’ll Meet Again will get a revival in our lifetimes. A poignant song from the very darkest days of a major war.

Here's the original version. The singer, who is still alive, turned 100 last March.

I saw it. Didn’t know what it was.

Looked like one of those pictures of a comet from the Middle Ages.

This is a good video of it.
