But in a twist that is sure to ruffle the fur of cat-lovers, new research shows that dogs are more intelligent than their feline foes after all.
Experts showed that dogs have more than twice as many brain cells in a region linked with thinking, planning and other complex behaviours.

I once saw a comic strip that featured a cat watching in horror as a dog owner issued commands to his pet: “sit,” “roll over,” “beg,” “heel,” “lie down,” etc. And the dog obeyed without complaining. The cat thought, “poor dog. He’ll never make it as a cat.”
LOL! Once of my fav scenes from a movie is Pet Cemetery. The old woman in her house with 100’s of cats living with her. She says she is out of cat food.
Next scene is a cat paw turning off the power to the house and then the cats attack her.
I love cats, have 4 of them inside, and 2 ferals that show up on my back porch every night for dinner. However, there is a reason you never hear of a Working Group for cats lol. When you look at breeds like Aussies and Boarder Collies it’ staggering the difference in intelligence.
The thing I notice about cats, or at least all the cats I have been around, is that they cannot recognize verbal command and phrases outside of their name. For instance, I had an Aussie for a number of years and at the mention of the words “outside” or “Treat” they would react appropriately because they recognized those words. Cats don’t seen to do this HOWEVER cats are exceptional at recognizing sounds. I tried and failed to associate giving them treats with the word “Treat” prior to giving them out, but to no avail. But no matter how quietly I try to open the treat bag in the kitchen they come rushing from all corners of the house, even the basement.
Seems cats more prone to instinct rather than learned behavior.

There really can’t be a serious debate about this. Both animals are domesticated, and appeal to people on different levels. But, dogs are intelligent enough to be trained to assist people, anything from helping the blind, assisting the infirm, or even recognizing symptoms and comforting those in distress.
Cats are great low maintenance pets.
Dogs are family members.

Cats don’t need extra brain cells for thinking, planning, or other complex behaviors. It is innate within them.
There really can’t be a serious debate about this. Both animals are domesticated, and appeal to people on different levels. But, dogs are intelligent enough to be trained to assist people, anything from helping the blind, assisting the infirm, or even recognizing symptoms and comforting those in distress.
Cats are great low maintenance pets.

I agree. If dogs are so smart, why do they eat their own poop, cat poop, and poop of other dogs?
Not once have my cats eaten their poop, licked their privates, and then licked me on the face. Who is more intelligent?

The Purina company that makes popular brands of cat food sponsors cat conventions and cat adoption events, and I did see a trainer with performing cats on stage at one of them. She used bits of food as performance incentives for their circus tricks of jumping through hoops, leaping across spaces and walking on narrow edges, etc. But I once had a house cat who was so grateful for being rescued that she performed a number of things as we trained her over time, such as choosing which flavor food she preferred on a given evening, opening doors, returning to the house when called, giving "kisses", a rudimentary understanding of quantities from one to four, etc. We used love, brushing and petting to encourage her.

LOL ............... I had many cats all my seventy years ......... the last eight years I have been fortunate to live with boxer dogs. They are fabulous and very funny.
Animals are all brilliant in their own ways............ This crap about humans being the "smartest"......... is pure ignorance.

I’ve noticed that too, but...
Two days ago, a 3-legged dog we adopted in 2011 died at the vets office in our town. Cause of death was complications (I think hemorrhage and shock) of a digestive blockage. The blockage was a particularly large quantity of blanket, carpet fibers, and stuffing. The idiot dog had a fetish for textiles and fibers and killed himself with it. Granted, he was probably the dumbest dog I ever owned, but I have NEVER owned a cat stupid enough to eat non-food items.
BTW, I am not particularly broken up about the dog dying; different story for my wife and daughter. :-(
A cat will not allow itself to be degraded by performing stupid stunts so that humans can be entertained.
Dogs have owners, cats have staff.
