Stillwater Cove Shark Attack (Pebble Beach)
KSBW ^

Posted on 11/24/2017 6:38:39 PM PST by nickcarraway

A shark attacked a spear fisherman Friday afternoon in Stillwater Cove near The Lodge at Pebble Beach.

It happened approximately 1:45 pm . One witness tells us that the victim suffered a significant bite to his right leg, but he is in stable condition at Natividad Hospital's trauma center in Salinas. Two off-duty sheriff's deputies were on the beach when the attack took place, helped pull the victim from the water and stabilized him until emergency responders arrived.

Advertisement The name of the victim, his age and where he lives have yet to be released by investigators. CHP and the county sheriff's department were on hand and now the California Department of Fish & Wildlife is taking over the investigation to determine exactly what happened and what kind of shark it is that attacked the man.

KSBW Action News 8 reporter Christopher Salas is on the scene and will have more details on evening editions of Action News 8 and here on KSBW.com

I love Stillwater Cove, fortunately I have never seen a shark there.

I just looked it up — didn’t realize that’s the cove off the 18th at Pebble. I found that Adventures By The Sea provides kayaking at Stillwater Cove. Gotta put that on my list! “By appointment only, this majestic cove is now open for guided kayak tours and Standup Paddle Board Lessons. Paddle with Point Lobos, Carmel Beach, and the Pebble Beach Golf Links all as the back drop to a great adventure on the water.”

You can only get to McWay Cove beach, where McWay Falls is, by kayak, I wonder if they will make that possible?
[Technically you can climb down, but my understanding is it’s a huge fine.]

I went down to Pt Lobos last May to kayak but is was too windy to be any fun so I didn't launch. The following week a kayaker was attacked by a shark near Pt Lobos. Fortunately for the kayaker the shark was only interested in the kayak and he was able to swim to a nearby boat and pulled out of the water. I have since given up the idea of ocean kayaking.

I don’t think it’s that dangerous, but why not try Elkhorn Slough?

We found it accidentally years ago and go there during our annual trip to Monterey. The bathrooms are great! Check out the private club gym right which overlooks the cove. I’ve taken many pictures there, the beach is very quiet and feels private.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
The shark was just protecting HIS turf.

The same way ‘WE’ would go after the shark if he came ashore and was foraging for food or, worse yet, just sport chumming..

“The Lodge” is where Mom says one should stay, but we want to make sure we don’t go in the water. Including Dog.

One of the ‘Homicide, Life on the Streets’ or very early ‘Police crime dramas’ used the term for a witness.

BBG-BG

What did he look like?

BIG BLACK GUY = BIG GUN

..one size fits all. seems to me is was in a Munch scene.
