Two people were killed when a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle along the 118 Freeway in Porter Ranch early Sunday, according to the CHP.

The California Highway Patrol began hearing reports of a car driving west along the eastbound carpool lane of traffic at a high-rate of speed about 12:25 a.m.

Stringer video captured the wrong-way driver along the 118 in San Fernando.

About 12:30 a.m. the wrong-way driver crashed head-on into another vehicle along the eastbound side of the highway near De Soto Avenue, according to the CHP log.

The vehicles, which were mangled in the crash, were blocking three lanes and traffic was halted in the area for the Los Angeles Fire Department to respond.

It is unknown why the driver, identified only as a 30-year-old man, was heading in the wrong direction. He was killed in the incident.

Occasionally it’s just the driver’s lack of familiarity with the road. I once found myself in this situation in the KC suburbs. It was very dark, and I took a left turn at a stop sign onto what I thought was a two lane street. Turned it had four lanes with a very low curb in the middle. After a couple of oncoming cars flashed their bright lights at me, I realized my mistake and drove over the curb into the correct lane. I was cold sober in an strange part of town, and it scared the crap of out me. Thank goodness traffic was very light.

I’ve never understood how this happens, until last week when I witnessed a driver sitting at a red light ahead of me.

There ya go. It's easily understandable. So. CA region has 17 + million. Lots of people, thousands on the roads how can't even speak the language or read English. Some of these wrong-way drivers have been Asian foreign nationals, straight from some 3rd world pit. Asians cause many collisions. The CHP's call it, driving while DWO, or, Driving While Oriental.☺

Not in this case. Were talking well lit super highways with world class signage. I know this area well. You could read a newspaper standing in the #1 lane at midnight. But I wouldn't recommend it. Anyone confused at this venue should never be behind the wheel in the first place.

The driver of the other vehicle, Christian Glenn, 38, of Simi Valley, also died.

I noted they ID'd the dead victim of this idiot and even said where he lived....But the the dead suspect? No ID, no place of residence given.

That seems a bit odd.☺

I remember a Modern Marvel’s episode about the German Autobahn.

They had a Polizei chief who was talking about the driving laws and “Geisterfahrers” (Ghost drivers). Geisterfahrers are mentally ill, or sociopaths who deliberately drive the wrong way on the autobahns.

It even happens in broad daylight:

I saw the aftermath of a collision on an Autobahn. It shut it down. We walked about 200 yards to see what the hold up was, as it had just occurred. Saw a bunch of people in a farmers field about 300 feet off the autobahn. Turned out the impact was so great the engine was ripped from the vehicle and sitting way out in the field still smoking. I never did forget that.

Very. In some venues hit and runs generally mean one thing.

More drunks/drug users on the roads as well after midnight.

My time over there only saw one fatal accident. The Polizei had large curtains erected around the crash to keep people from rubbernecking.

One thing that surprises me is that fatal accidents are really not as common over there as they are here. Even with virtually no speed limits their fatality rates are much lower than here.

That’s true, but California has an over abundance of them, in my opinion.

You're right. Good reason for that. Germans are good drivers for the most part. They were when I was there some years back. They don't mess around on the open road. I learned real quick, if you're not traveling in excess of 90+ mph, you do not get in the #1 lane, (Far left) on an open autobahn. Otherwise you'll have a Mercedes bearing down on you at 120 mph and they'll light up anyone stupid enough to do that with their racks of driving/fog lamps and then stand on their tuned horns.

But when they do have collisions, they can resemble aircraft crash scenes.

#6. Try this one on for size. DC, any time.

Four lane divided street through the heart of DC about 2:30 PM. I’m in the speed lane of two, third is parking, heading east with a GREEN LIGHT.

Heavy traffic coming down the opposite lane, with the same GREEN LIGHT.

A 1/2 ton Rental Type truck with tailgate on my right, doing the legal speed limit but he blocked my view of anything coming from the cross street (Right to Left).

All of s sudden, a jerk on a very small motorbike shoots across our side of the street from the RIGHT (I missed him by about 6 inches because I never saw him until he cleared the front of the truck at my immediate right. We were doing about 25-30 miles an hour (per speed limit).

The biker continues to run the red light across our two lanes and then across the two oncoming Left lanes, nearly getting hit by two other cars who never saw him until he was in front of them.

His stupidity bet out the jerk who was, in a different incident, in the Left turn lane of a four lane street heading North. He suddenly swung right from the Turn lane, across the other three lanes and then swung into a nearby street.

I could have made my fortune selling DEPENDS that day. The asshole used up 4 of his lives that day and lived to tell about it. But one day he’s going to get nailed (T-Boned) and killed. Some people are just plain dumbassed stupid. He will not be missed by decent drivers.

And this happens on a daily basis in the DC metropolitan area. Some drivers have defied the laws of physics and gravity. You’ve just got to see it to believe it.

Come to DC (in an armored truck) if you want to see the show of clowns, fools, and crazies (and that’s not just applicable to Congress).

I know all about D.C. Was born there, Bolling Air Force Base, and when I was in Jr. High we moved back to Virginia, Fairfax County. Went to Robert Frost Jr. High & then W.T. Woodson High School. Had several jobs in D.C. Trust me California is much worse because it is magnified by 1,000 times. It's even worse the New York City, and I hated driving there as well. I saw D.C. & the suburbs grow from a medium sized area to a very big congested area, so it has gotten considerably worse over time.

That person was indeed lucky, probably high on something. 8>)

Yeah, their drivers ed makes ours look like a joke. They have annual vehicle inspections that check for serviceability/safety instead of just emissions. And their Polizei actually enforce traffic laws.
