Verify: The healing power of poop

If I told you there's a new kind of medicine that could heal you, but it was made from germs, would you take it?

If you’re open to the idea – or maybe because it sounds gross – then hang with me and let’s start here. We see germs as a threat, and we've gotten really good at killing the ones that cause infections with things like hand sanitizers and antibiotics.

In fact, since 1950 the rate of infectious diseases, like measles, mumps and TB has plummeted. But during that same time, chronic diseases, including asthma, diabetes and Crohn’s disease have skyrocketed.

Is there a connection? Could it be, we're so obsessed with killing germs that we're making ourselves sick with other illnesses?

HOW BAD ARE GERMS, ANYWAY?

Google bacteria and an autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis. You’ll be surprised at the recent studies.

I believe that the gut flora is likely one of the most important factors in our health. It I also likely to be key to the treatment of many disorders in the future. I do not believe that the risks should be mischaracterized by exaggerated stories based on a single situation.

It’s a mixed bag currently. FMTs should not be taken lightly. Even the ones for C Diff do not always work. That hasn’t stopped people from exploring on their own. The gut biome can also be changed with prebiotics and probiotics. Medical science is going to change radically.

My daughter makes this - there’s jars all over the place and those very weird scoby things growing in the fridge. The kids love it. I tasted it and it’s not bad.

I believe that you are absolutely correct. I certainly would not want any substance rich in bacteria such as the feces from another person introduced into my digestive system unless I was certain that the donor had no unhealthy disorders which could be transmitted.

A few years ago my appendix ruptured. I experienced abdominal pain for weeks before I sought treatment. When my wife finally insisted that I go to the hospital I had to have emergency surgery and was told afterward that I was very lucky to have survived. My appendix had been ruptured and leaking into my abdominal cavity for at least a couple of weeks.

They put me on very strong and serious antibiotics. This of course reeked havoc on the bacteria in my digestive system. It took months for things to get back to normal even with the help of probiotics. My ability to properly absorb nutrients had taken a huge hit. It probably would have been a good idea for me to have ingested healthy fecal material or had it planted in my intestines.

Here are two good articles from Scientific American, a reputable source for information.

Search Google:

“I think the book was called The Making of a Surgeon.”

Interesting book - hadn’t thought of it for decades.

That’s a good price. I think I paid that much for 6 bottles from Amazon.
