The Trojan who blocked Andrusyshyn’s kick was Bill Hayhoe, who normally played as an offensive tackle, but Coach McKay sent him in on the place kick because of his height.

My $0.02 worth of modest proposal:

Change the substitution rules and make say, four or five players play both offense and defense. They can still get substituted in & out, but it would have to be over a period of time.

Then you’d see a different type of athlete instead of a behemoth.

As I said, just my $0.02.

Since today is my birthday, and I’m trying to stay in a good mood, I’ll refrain from any OJ comparisons.

That’s the guy. I think we had one more shot but we all sensed it was over.

I will never forget watching my first football game. It was either ‘44 or ‘45 in the Coliseum, SC played UCLA. Don’t remember the score, but SC won. They had the Hardy brothers.

Your 2¢ worth makes sense. One platoon football as in the late 50’s and early 60’s would cut scholarships thus costs. Players would have to be fundamentally sound and well conditioned. Of course with the concussion issue and the feminization effort against the American male, football will likely vanish or be p!aged under drastically different rules in 30 years.

‘44 or ‘45?

You got me beat.

The first one I went to was in ‘56 when Downey HS (my father’s alma matre) played Anaheim HS for the CIF championship. It was so foggy you could hardly see the game.

That probably would have been the game of November 25, 1944, a warm and sunny day during which the Trojans outlasted the Bruins 40-13. In those years, USC and UCLA played twice a season, and they played to a tie earlier that season in the first round.

That would be unfortunate. Football is a uniquely American game, and one of the traits that sets Americans off from the rest of the world is the ability to understand and appreciate football, a game whose rules and procedures most foreigners find baffling.

But we're making America great again, so that probably won't happen.

It was the day after my tenth birthday fifty years ago, and I was there in the Coliseum. It was I think my fourth trip to Los Angeles from where I lived in Orange County. My brother took me. I remember it well! I’ve been a USC fan ever since.

There’s no reason on earth that UCLA should win today, but this series is noted for shocking upsets. If it happens that way, it will really Bruin my birthday weekend.

I bet my parents were at that game! Both UCLA grads and lifelong season ticket holders.

Norm Dow coached Live Oak HS football in Morgan Hill until a few years ago. He retired from coaching, but I believe he is still teaching at Live Oak. He’s a great guy and was a great coach.
