Mother sues U.S. Navy after sailor killed infants in her arms

ACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville mother whose twins were shot and killed as she held them is now suing the U.S. government.

She says the government could have stopped the shooting that claimed the infants' lives.

Megan Hiatt says the U.S. Navy knew her ex-boyfriend Gawain Wilson was agitated and made threats when he left his shift at Naval Station Mayport Nov. 5, 2015.

Hiatt's father Travis was helping her move out Wilson's home when Wilson came back from work early.

Wilson shot and killed Travis as he tried to protect his daughter.

He then forced the Hiatt, who was 22 at the time, to watch as he killed their twin daughters Hayden Rose and Kayden Reese in her arms.

Wilson then shot Hiatt in the head and killed himself. Hiatt's friend was also at the house during the shooting but escaped unharmed.

I don’t even remember this incident being reported up here in PA. Sad, sad story.

If she can prove he had a history of violence against women, and that “co workers” heard him making threats over the phone before he went home...she MAY have a case. Especially if one of them told the Chief. Or OOD.

The Navy had the authority to prevent him from leaving the base...based on suspicion alone. Whether “the Navy” had sufficient time to react is another matter.

And my experience in the Navy says they would have prevented him from leaving until they were sure he had calmed down...if somebody, anybody in authority had known the above.

I doubt she will win that lawsuit, simply because he left without authorization. On top of that though I am sure she knew he was a violent individual, and that was the reason she was leaving. Seems strange also that she is asking for such a small sum of money.

I know the Army jumps through hoops to separate couples that are fighting, even without threats of violence. They keep the soldier in barracks until things calm down or are otherwise resolved. I can’t imagine the Navy would be that different. Most now are aware of the dangers of domestic issues.

So any nutball’s boss is responsible for figuring out if he will commit violence and what? Just shoot him as he leaves?

Sad, especially for the innocent babies.

But I hate to say....all this immorality does not add up to a positive outcome.

“the Army jumps through hoops to separate couples that are fighting, even without threats of violence. They keep the soldier in barracks until things calm down”

Ditto for the Air Force. In the ‘70s my then-husband was abusive. Then, domestic abuse wasn’t “a thing”; I didn’t report him. My supervisors at work noticed marks on me and notified the base Commander. Hubby was visited and told he would have to move to base housing if it happened again.

From then on, “only” verbal and emotional abuse. Then he became my ex. O happy day!

Isn’t this a great country since the amoral godless have taken over? Such heartwarming stories to show the real character of people without God.

The Navy could have restricted him to base, but the restriction is not physical restraint, it’s more like a house arrest without a monitor bracelet. It’s more of a “don’t leave the base or else” deal. He would have been free to come and go.

The article says “co-workers”, not “boss”, overheard him making threats. It also states that the USN knew about his history of violence, but did nothing. A dirtbag like that shouldn’t have access to weapons of any kind, and probably should have been in the brig. He was a timebomb, just waiting to go off.

She chooses to reproduce with a murderous psychopath and blames THE NAVY??? The Navy had to have seen signs of danger but she-who mated with him- didn’t?? She chose badly and paid the price. Lots of times ‘bad’ boys are really, seriously bad. Poor man and his grandbabies.

She should have gotten to know him before making babies with him. Must have watched ‘Blazing Saddles’.
