Mexican illegals were farm workers back then. They came here to work, not to get welfare. They didn’t protest and get in your face. Back then, most were the mythical people Jeb Bush talks about.

Odd, I don’t recall anything close to 9/11 back in the ‘60s.

Back then people, on the whole, respected fences and no one had to lock their doors. I’m not talking about thieves, but neighbors and people in general. Today, we have fishermen who think we’ve built our dock especially for them. They’ll get out and fish and even take dumps. A neighbor, a big VP at a WELL known computer company, and his teen son would make themselves at home on anyone’s porch and get upset if the owner told them to leave.

At least in ‘61 you could get in to see a doctor.

You didn’t get groped by the TSA back then and didn’t have passenger planes blown out of the skies by underwear bombers. You were treated like royalty by the stewardesses and weren’t beaten and dragged off because some airline employee wanted your seat. And you had leg room.

The first new car my Dad ever bought was a ‘57 Belair 4 door sedan. Couldn’t talk him into a hardtop. But I was 17 at the time and loved driving that car.

A friend had a big old black/white Bel Air. Don’t remember the year. Do remember every few minutes the a/c would blow chunks of ice on you.

Isn’t the rate of violent crime about the same now as in the ‘50’s, or even lower today ? At least women don’t have to take being beaten by the husband b/c he is in charge. Or raped ? Cannot tell anyone. Kids molested ? Definitely don’t tell anyone, after all he is a good upstanding member of the community. For every cookie baking, golf playing high achieving wonder family of 60 or 70 years ago, peal back what was hidden under these lives and you will most likely find parents that were alcoholics, the father abusive, mother that was unfaithful, children that were gay etc.

In 1961 I went to sleep.

In 2017 I awoke and found myself living in an episode of the Twilight Zone. An episode that never ends, and only gets more bizarre as each day goes by.

Only for real......

I would be happy to time travel back to 1970, where I could find work and enjoy a very nice life, minus all the politics of self destruction.

But even in 1970, the seeds of economic destruction had been planted and were growing apace....

And not go bankrupt in the process.

I heard a 1950s Johnny Dollar radio show not too long ago (”the insurance investigator with the action-packed expense account”).

One item on his expense account was, “$18 for a night in hospital after getting beaten up.”

Even if the inflation multiplier were 25 times, that’s still only $450 for a night in the hospital. It was $5,000 here five years ago.

Another example, had a case here ten years ago when a man went to the emergency room for a bad cut. They put some disinfectant and a band aid on it. Over $600.

Perhaps you also don’t remember the standoff in Berlin!

I was stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany in '61 and got extended by 6 months because of the commies messing with Berlin.

We were scared spitless that the soviet tanks were gonna roll, because every GI stationed in Europe knew that if those tanks moved, we were just cannon fodder, meant only to slow them down.

Mr. Ed may be the only hitter to get an inside the park home run off Sandy Koufax.

Things never have been (and never *will* be) anywhere with 1,000 light years of perfect. But in 1961 (I was a kid then but still remember vividly) things were, overall,*much* better than they are today.

I don’t believe that. You don’t look a day over 39.

The mind does play tricks with regard to time. High school was the worst 4 years of my life. But the older I get, the more those seem like the idyllic good old days.

I think the human brain is designed to retain the pleasant memories and discard the unpleasant ones.

I read most of the responses to this thread and I can confidently say that if any of them were suddenly transported back to 1961, they'd be howling for a return back to 2017 within 24 hours.

The only way I would want to go back in time would be if I was made younger and if I could retain the knowledge that I have now. Then at least I could take advantage by investing in companies like Microsoft, McDonalds, Wal-Mart, IBM and Apple early on.

I don’t think any of us would want to give up the technological advances we have now, but I’d gladly like to have the culture back.

We were taught that if we got a good education, worked hard, that anything was possible. We were expected to marry and have children in wedlock.

Our long trip to the sewer began with Lyndon Johnson’s great society programs.

Herman Munster blasted homers off of Dodger pitching, but I don’t think Sandy was on the mound.

As well as, Herman’s were Judgeian blasts rather than inside-the-park.

I was 14 in 1961. I remember we had a red textbook telling us how evil communism was.
