Ethnic studies eyed by Boston teachers
Boston Herald ^ | September 5, 2017 | Kathleen McKiernan

A group of Boston Public Schools teachers is aiming to build a new ethnic studies curriculum for schools across the district to expose Boston kids in the majority-minority district to the diverse histories and cultures of their families.

“The mission is to have a curriculum that meets student needs and is reflective of our students’ backgrounds,” said Natalia Cuadra-Saez, a history teacher at Snowden International School who this summer travelled to Savannah, Ga., for a workshop focused on the Gullah descendants of slaves. “It is something students can relate to more. It is more relevant to them. When they see themselves in the curriculum, students do better overall. They want to know these stories.”

The fact that they can’t read, write, spell or do math at their grade level is beside the point, I’m sure.

If they taught English, math, and science in the time they had, they wouldn’t need fluff like self-esteem or ethnic studies. Minority students could feel good over real accomplishments instead of learning that it’s someone else’s fault that they are uneducated.

I thought ‘e pluribus unum’ — we were all one people formed out of many peoples.

Obviously I was wrong.

Would a better translation of that, be, just another means to bash whites?

Well, I hope that they teach what the Civil War was all about, and the blood that was expended on both sides to unite these 50 states. No more tearing down statues of men who gave their lives for the values they fought for.

Majority-minority is what they always wanted and they still arent happy.

Will there be recoginition of the newest minority former majority or will they be marginalized and demonized?

Gotta hand it to Boston, they elected a mayor who makes Thomas Menino appear bright.

This is a great idea! And whatever you do, don’t teach them anything useful like math, or science, or how to write a useful business resume.

Yeah, you know who should be teaching kids about the diverse histories and cultures of their families? That's right - their families should. Schools should be teaching these kids math, science, and literacy skills - not trying to inculcate children into the identity politics so beloved by the Left.

Hopefully enough concerned parents will attend PTA meeting and send email to the school district to stop this nonsense and get the school curriculum back on track.

At their grade level?!?!! I’d be happy for four grades below.

Been kind of big brothering some spanish kids from Brooklyn

13 and 15.

We had to start with the STATES. Because they thought almost every state I named was a COUNTRY and Mexico was a STATE.

Sad part is they learned really quickly the 50 states and many countries in exchange for a movie matinee.

The high cost of low expectations kills these kids.

That and their disastrous home life.
