Aside from listing the incidents, this article is fairly detail free. But its looks unlikely to be a coincidence.

Which of our enemies would like to see our ships docked for months for repairs and out of the battle?

This situation has gone far beyond Under Siege-type alarming.

Just like any person who has been doing a gig like his for decades, you build relationships with many in the business of Intel.

They would have to “hack” the receiver on the ship. If someone “hacked/altered a set of GPS signals it’s going to read out the same error for everyone. As far as I know all US warships carry standard GPS units as a backup should there be a problem with the “secure” GPS system. If the two disagree there is an alarm interface and Radars don’t lie!

isn’t there radar to detect other ships and their trajectory?

Obviously, collusion between Trump and the Chinese in an effort to sink Sen John McCain.

I would have suspected the CO was in the rack because of the time the collision occurred which gives him some sort of excuse, but whoever was the XO at the time is the issue. As we know, the CO is ultimately going to be disciplined because he did not make sure his subordinates were trained or disciplined enough to do the job properly.

I personally see this as a much higher end of the buck of responsibility.

The military GPS receiver has a feature to prevent Spoofing and jamming unlike the civilian GPS receivers.

There are always counter-counter measures.

“GPS tells you where you are. It doesn’t tell you where the other ship is or where it is headed (about to run into you). Encrypted GPS doesn’t solve that problem.”

Yes, but if the US vessel's GPS coordinates, along with the AIS information from the other ship's transponder say everything is fine - but this is based upon hacked data, things aren't going to go well.

If something like this did happen, it's essentially an act of war.

These accidents are due to inexperienced officers who are also overworked by the current demands on them. They just have not been properly trained as seaman. You really don’t need anything other than experienced officer and the mark 1 eyeball to keep a destroyer clear of a collision.

Sorry,

This is poor seamanship.

I assume the destroyer would have some fantastic radar to detect other ships, incoming missiles, etc. If not, they should install some.

I’ve read destroyers’ and carriers’ radar can literally pick up a popsicle stick tossed over the bow.

“This is poor seamanship.”

I have seen officers who were as dumb as sacks of dirt stand bridge watches for entire Westpacs and never hit anything.

Several officers. Several Westpacs.

I might buy incompetence once, but not four times. Further, I think the CO must have been on the bridge while transiting those straits at night.

Interesting, did not know about the second GPS to compare.

If the Navy have something like that, they should be able to detect any hacking of the unencrypted signal that would alternate the civilian ship coarse.

I wonder if the other ships are using GLONASS for navigation and that is the system being hack, so the Navy does not know it because they watching the US system only.

Well, our Seamanship is apparently all shot to hell, but by God, thanks to obama and the previous Secretary of Defense instead of worrying about pesky things like navigation and Seamanship we now have transgenderism and gays openly serving in the military...So, yeah, we got that going for us.

Can’t navigate or fight worth a $hit but all the freaks and queers are free to serve, so that’s a bonus...Yay!!!

Could be.

The responses on this thread indicate that there is a great deal of misunderstanding concerning “Government Property Lost, Damaged or Destroyed”.

In the Army, a Report of Survey was often done.

The Surveying Officer had to determine the “Proximate Cause” of the damage.

If I remember right, proximate cause was defined as the unbroken string of events that led to the damage.

I just don’t think that the actions of the crew of the McCain are going to fall into that unbroken chain of events.

Now, that doesn’t mean that there was no negligence by our Sailors.

Their negligence may have “contributed” to the incident, but not “cause” the incident.

It’s legalese, but that’s how things work.

I think Obama hacked the fleet with eight years of establishing the wrong personnel.

I would not attribute to conspiracy what can be explained by simple carelessness. Besides, if an enemy had such a weapon why would they reveal it now to no purpose? It only gives us a chance to examine our vulnerabilities and correct them.
