Lawyer Hopes Blood-Sucking [Leeches} Treatment Will Return Sight - Blinded by Schizophrenic Son

The leech man: Lawyer hopes nightly blood-sucking treatment will help return his sight after his 'schizophrenic son blinded him'

A lawyer is hoping that a nightly blood-sucking leech treatment will help return his eyesight after his schizophrenic son allegedly blinded him in a blitz attack.

John Dunlap, 80, is placing his trust in an experimental treatment that requires him to attach several leeches around his eyes so that one day he might see again.

The lawyer from Memphis started the bizarre therapy after his bipolar and schizophrenic son Andrew, 41, allegedly attacked Dunlap and blinded him in 2015.

With the help of his wife, Marcia, Dunlap has worms sucking blood from his face for an hour, in hopes that the leeches' saliva will help restore health to his blinded eye.

Dunlap was allegedly blinded when his mentally ill son Andrew attacked the elderly man at his home in Southwind, Tennessee, in May of 2015.

Andrew was charged with attempted murder and domestic assault after he allegedly went off his medications and pushed Dunlap down the stairs, before jumping on top of him and gouging out his eye.

My MIL was recently treated for serious cancer, including a skin graft.

Those leeches were used to draw blood from the grafted skin area.

Visitors were not thrilled over looking at it, btw.

The old gal didn’t make it, dying after 30+ days mostly in intensive care, from complications.

She turned 90 during her stay in the hospital.

What’s the difference between a lawyer and a blood sucking leech?

Trick question: There is no difference.

The son, Andrew, should be put down. They’re just giving him the “bipolar and schizophrenic” label so he doesn’t have to face real justice for his crime.

Society has no use for someone that would attack their own parents like this — especially elderly parents. The father, being a lawyer, knows how to help his POS son get off lightly. I certainly don’t know for sure but it may be the family’s coddling of the POS son that led to him being the way he is. Either way, the son is of no value to society and never will be.

Since we are telling lawyer jokes, here’s one for the file:

Question: Why don’t sharks attack lawyers?

Answer: Professional Courtesy.

I had to read the headline three times. My initial understanding was a lawyer was hoping another group of lawyers would offer treatment to return sight of his son.

I've never heard of "blood-sucking leech" outside of the context of being a lawyer.

Reminds me of the Mascara ads on TV theses days. Their lashes are so long they could paint a wall with them.

As far as the medical side of this, leeches inject a very complex *local* anticoagulant mix into their host, to keep their blood flowing in the area, plus lots of other chemicals that do all sorts of interesting things.

“Their saliva has over 100 bioactive substances that are very beneficial. One such component is hirudin, which acts as an anticoagulation agent. Calin is another component that also inhibits blood coagulation. A component that dissolves fibrin clots as well as inhibits the formation of thrombus is the destabilase. Leech saliva also contains a Factor Xa inhibitor, and this compound restrains the coagulating effect of the coagulation Factor Xa. It also has hyaluronidase that enhances the viscosity of the interstitial fluid. For vasodilating effect, it has acetylcholine and histamine-like substances as well as carboxypeptidase A inhibitors. These three can increase blood flow by dilating constricted vessels. These are just some of the very useful components in leech saliva.

“Those mentioned above all work together to decrease the viscosity of the blood, making its consistency thinner so as to promote better blood flow. Blood that has a thick consistency makes it prone to clot formation as well as increases the blood pressure of an individual. These clots can travel to different parts of the body and block a vessel, which could then cause a stroke or heart attack. Thick blood poses a risk that the distal extremities, especially the tips of the fingers and toes, will not receive adequate oxygenated blood and the nutrients they need. Therefore, the anticoagulation component in leeches saliva is vital as it naturally makes the blood thinner and works to inhibit platelet coagulation.

“Patients with cardiovascular disease undergo leech therapy on different areas of their body than, lets say, patients with peripheral vascular disease. In each case leeches will promote better blood flow to the region.”

After Vietnam, I really, really do not like damned leeches.

I'm normally a calm, fairly cool and collected man under most circumstances, but finding a leech on me sends me into all kinds of gyrations, contortions, cursing, yelling...etc.

I avoid areas that have had them or reports of any in the last 100 years.

I once came out of a paddy in VN with so many of those damned things on me, it took a half pack of cigarettes and two of my buddies to get them all off.

I HATE DAMN LEECHES!

If you combine it with Rogaine, his hair will stand on end.
