SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia wildlife authorities say an Eastern Milksnake in Kanawha County has tested positive for snake fungal disease in the first contemporary occurrence in the state.
Kevin Oxenrider, Division of Natural Resources wildlife biologist, says dramatic declines in snake populations, particularly rattlesnakes farther north, have been linked to the disease.

"Anyone who sees clinical signs of the disease on a snake - swelling, crusty scabs or open wounds on the skin - is asked to contact the division."
The DNR has lost their minds! Like am going out in the forest and check Milksnakes for fungus. Opps it was a Copperhead, my bad!

Thought it was fungus on a milkshake at first read.
Sorry, can’t get too upset over the demise of poisonous snakes.

No problem if it only affected the poisonous snakes .....but the non-poisonous snakes are very important to maintain rodent control in the forest.....

[Snake fungal disease isnt the only worry for snake populations. A 2010 study in Biology Letters found some worrying evidence of a global decline in snakes, possible related to habitat deterioration, lack of prey and,
maybe, climate change. But the status of the worlds snakes right now isnt really clear. Theres so little known about so many snake species that scientists cant say how bad the situation might be.]

We have had a lot of wet weather, that may cause the fungus to flourish in the snakes.

People get fungal infections on damp feet. It makes sense that snakes could pick up a fungal disease because of excessive moisture.
The question is do these same snakes have fungal disease in dry climates?

Still believing this “spreading disease” will put snakes on the endangered species list. GLOBAL WARMING alert.
