More students in the U.S. are coming homes with A’s on their report cards, while overall SAT scores are dropping, according to a Harvard study.

The Harvard Graduate School of Education found that nearly half (47%) of all high school students in 2016 had an A average on their report cards, compared to 38.9% in 1998. Meanwhile, their average SAT score fell from 1,026 to 1,002 on a 1,600 point scale.

Additionally, the study found that only 56% of those students end up completing a four-year degree within six years of entering college.

My dad is a teacher. He still grades on a curve...as in a standard distribution. The majority of his students get a 'C', which is meant to be 'average'...around 15% get 'B's, 15% get 'D's, and a very few get an 'A' or an 'F'. And sometimes the Indian and Chinese students will ruin the curve so bad, a 91% will get you a 'B-'.

I have never known another teacher in my lifetime to grade in such a way, but I've always suspected that his method was considered typical before the 1960s.

An A today is probably equivalent to a C 50 years ago.

I think it was typical 50 years ago. Now it’s gone from everyone gets a trophy to everyone gets an A. Pathetic.

Back around 2012...colleges around Arlington, VA area,
both two-year and four-year operations began to require a basic high school math course-at-the-college level....which meant zero credit but it was to raise you to the level expected in college. There was a bit of talk at the time that they were also talking about a history and English type non-credit college course....to bring people up to standards.

I expect in twenty years that as you graduate from high school...to get into any US university...you will have to attend twelve months of HS-level classes to satisfy most colleges. It says a lot about the ‘slippage’ of high school and the worthless value.

They’re lowering the standards is why more kids are getting “A”’s.

You can drop the sarcasm tag.

That answer IS being pushed out there.
It’s because the SAT is racist.

I expect within a decade the jelly-spined liberals
in charge of universities will cave and stop
requiring the test for admissions.

but but but, they get high marks in social justice ideals, drug experimentation, and being affable (except to conservative values individuals for which they get extra credit if they demonize them).

And this is with the “adjusted” SAT scores from 1996 to hide the failures of public schools.. A score of 1002 today is only equivalent to 890 on the original scale.

To be totally honest, an SAT score of 1002 is not even equivalent to a C. I don’t think it is possible to earn a worthwhile college degree with that score. Why are we fooling ourselves?

Do you have a good, quotable source for SAT normalization across the years?

I expect within a decade that college enrollments will plummet as more and more parents and students wake up to the fact that college is useless, that what college teaches for the most part is pure nonsense, and that business hiring prefences will favor those who were smart enough not to waste money or go into debt on college, where the trend is to come out dumber than when you went in.

It’s a cycle. The crooked education industry spent years inflating SAT scores. Now they are inflating school grades.

Honest grading on a curve is now considered RACIST my FRiend!

And drawing a curve of IQ and detailing where various groups tend to fall on that curve is nearly a hanging offense!

There is a dangerous denial of and fear of the truth in almost any form and about almost anything. We live in a fantasy world and pretend that even the most insane things are actually true.

God help us.

Regarding admissions, they’re already trying to de-emphasize the SAT at many universities. I’m not sure what they’re doing for STEM admissions. You can get away with that nonsense in the Leftist Arts, but as Richard Feynman famously put it, “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.” And make no mistake about it, modern life depends on successful technology.

ACT tests are a much better assessment than the SAT. Many colleges now ignore the SAT and use ACT scores, my son’s college did.

My source for the adjustment calculation was:
http://www.greenes.com/html/convert.htm

The College Board also has equivalence tables:

Its our increasingly bureaucratic and useless public schools pushing kids towards “college”

Its another tax-payer funded racket in which all the players benefit off of public money and massive debt.
