WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is giving up the legal fight over the name of the Washington Redskins.
In a letter to a federal appeals court, the department said last week's Supreme Court decision in Matal v. Tam in favor of an Asian-American band calling itself the Slants means the NFL team will prevail in a legal battle to cancel the team's trademarks because the name is disparaging to Native Americans.

There’s also something ironic about “Fight[ing] for old D C” when they play in Maryland and practice in Virginia.

Were I Dan Snyder, I’d purchase billboards, bus ads and newspaper ads all over DC proclaiming in HUGE BOLD Letters: HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! with a 1-800 number to purchase 2017 season tickets.

The Dolphins had the song first and I believed successfully sued the Houston Oilers...

Just goes to show how much I’ve forgotten since I lost interest in the NFL since Dan Schneider bought the skins.
As for the Dolphins, since their perfect season culminated in blanking the Skins in SuperBowl VII, you’ll understand my memory lapse. ;>)
Interesting history about the Redskins fight song.
“When the NFL began considering expansion to Texas, Marshall [owner of the Redskins] strongly opposed the move, as he had enjoyed a monopoly in the South for three decades (apart from the one-year appearance of the Dallas Texans in 1952). Potential owner Clint Murchison, who was trying to bring the NFL to Dallas, bought the rights to “Hail to the Redskins” from a disgruntled Breeskin and threatened to prevent Marshall from playing it at games. Marshall agreed to back Murchison’s bid, Murchison gave him back the rights to the song, and the Dallas Cowboys were born.
