It's that time of year again. It is a phenomenon that FReepers are among the most astute people around, yet FReepers are such lousy boaters.

And to all you weekend warriors, scurvy scoundrels, sunburned scallywags, assorted sea lubbers, pirates, buccaneers, privateers and fly-over-country deplorables, pay attention to item #7.

FReepers always seem to be losing stuff overboard. Like firearms...

Hope to take my 16 ft. Carolina Skiff out for some fishing around Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel tomorrow.

My wife and I live on a 36ft Tashing Tashiba. We are ALWAYS safety conscience. If we crash or sink it, almost everything we own goes with it.

I’ve learned the hard way.

Never carry all your firearms and ammo in one trip. Always store firearms and ammo in watertight floating containers. Not doing so can lead to irreplaceable financial loss.

No alcohol? Whaaat? Dropping anchor at the sandbar just wouldn’t be right without a case of beer. And the after dinner cocktail cruise just wouldn’t be the same.

And where’s the rule about leaving the weapons cache back on land. That’s the one that hits us FReeps the hardest.

I will add one more tip. Always have a sharp knife ready and available with easy access at all times when boating.

I worked with a guy who went boating, got drunk, and crashed his boat into an immovable object. He ended up with multiple fractures, and his face was destroyed. After many surgeries, you still couldn’t recognize the guy from what he used to look like. Nice guy...just stupid.

I don't see the warning about storing guns on boats, and that is something some of us are notrtioris for doing. And then, we loose all our weapons!

1) Driving a boat and drinking alcohol do not mix
2) Driving a boat and drinking alcohol do not mix
3) Driving a boat and drinking alcohol do not mix

And don’t forget your gun collection!

Number 4 is not always possible. I made sure there was a laminated list in plain view with emergency numbers for phones and frequencies for the radio. Good idea to include a local towing service in those numbers. My 26 foot cruiser crapped out on me just before the channel entrance to the harbor. Didn't have an anchor yet, so called the towing service and towed us back to the slip. If not for that, may have wound up on breakwater rocks before Harbor Police could get to our location.

Number 7 should always be rule for the skipper. However, if the passengers drink, stop any horseplay immediately.

Thank GOD you warned me. Here I was, thinking of building my own 19' Barrelback from Ken Hankinson's plans. Disaster averted!

I went fishing this morning and took all my guns and ammo with me for a nice ride and wouldn't you know it! Boat accidentally sprung a leak and sank right to the bottom of the lake!

I'll never see those guns and ammo again!
