Because most marathons are run on fairly flat courses. These races in Mexico are run on some pretty daunting terrain. These courses have major elevation changes through the entire race.

“And still finished 15-20 minutes after the first man did.”

And your point is?

I think I remember the Tarahumaras were once banned from Olympic competition.

The men play some crazy “ball” competition where two teams kick a round rock back and forth miles and miles over rugged desert canyons with the goal of kicking the ball back to their home village.

Ah. Sorry. I forgot it is far more important to concentrate on the accomplishments of an indigenous woman running a race (and winning it in sandals made from tires treads) than anything else.

No goats just a 25 lb backpack. However, running is out of the question. She wins.

I take issue with the watering down of sports in the name of Title IX to accommodate females in sports at the expense of men’s sports, and everything that has gone along with that.

It isn’t that I think women can’t compete physically to reach their maximum potential, it is the fact that they cannot compete physically with men. And this fantasy that they can, perpetuated and fostered by the media and Hollywood, is dangerous and destructive. We are seeing the fruits of it in the military.

No, woman are different.
They will never run as fast as men.
But their accomplishments are noteworthy when they happen especially when measured against other women.

I agree with you completely on that.

Forgive my knee jerk post. Someone running a marathon in sandals is noteworthy, I have to agree.

My grandfather ran the Boston Marathon back in 1921 on a dare, with no training, running in a pair of street shoes and finished in 3:05. He lost five toenails. Kind of hard to believe that time, but they had an article in the paper about it.

“...her pair of sandals was reportedly made from recycled tyre rubber. “

Probably could have run the heck out of the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

He was an interesting guy-here he is back in WWI:

Anyway, thanks for taking enough offense to call me out, but not take enough offense to make it personal...:)

It would have been an honor to have met your grandfather.
I have run three marathons myself and follow the sport closely.
Someone who ran one back when your grandfather did; is really amazing.
