town into homeless magnet By Joseph J. Kolb Published May 17, 2017 Fox News

NOW PLAYING New poll shows shift on marijuana legalization From his sidewalk vantage point in front of an outdoor equipment store in downtown Durango, Colo., Matthew Marinseck has seen a transformation in this mountain resort town.

The picturesque town near the New Mexico border, once a vibrant, upscale community dotted with luxury hotels, is being overrun by panhandlers – thanks, in part, to the legalization of marijuana.

The town suddenly became a haven for recreational pot users, drawing in transients, panhandlers and a large number of homeless drug addicts, according to officials and business owners. Many are coming from New Mexico, Arizona and even New York.

“Legalized marijuana has drawn a lot of kids here from other states and the impact has not all been good,” said Marinseck, 58, while holding a cardboard sign asking for “help.”

Sounds like you’re speaking with someone who knows first hand, so I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss. In my own experience as well, wardaddy is correct, the pleasurable attributes that so many enjoy may not last. With extended regular use, effects tend to morph into being somewhat of a depressant and beyond that lies an exacerbation of the anxiety you’re attempting to avoid. That’s why I stopped in college. Unmotivated, but paranoid and jittery is no way to go through life, certainly not intentionally.

You cannot beat the scenery. Breathtaking is all I hear if I drive from Flora Vista NM to Durango with company as we top the hill on hwy 550 just before the drop to hwy 160. That view looking down on south Durango is awesome with the rockies framed over the town.

I’m of a mind that too much of anything is bad for us. Based on my personal experience as medicinal user & my observations of people I’ve known who’ve used cannabis daily for decades, none of these “claims” stand up.

I’ve experienced the opposite of what you & warrdaddy describe in every way. I’m much more motivated to accomplish goals & such than I ever was while under the anvil of depression/anxiety. The quality of my work has improved & I have new projects lined up to tackle after this year’s batch are completed. I’m much more active now & even play bass for the 10am Mass group. Something I would never have done prior to Feb 2015.

I even LOST 75 lbs while using cannabis. So much for the “all stoners get the munchies” thing, doesn’t it?

Do I believe some people experience what you describe? Certainly. People with addictive personalities should’t be using cannabis or any other mood altering drug. Same for people who are unable to set limits for themselves.

Don’t be obtuse about my evidence

Anyone here knows I was a prankster equivalent in my days

Nearly two decades of weed smoking

NORML advocate

A southern yippie I’m sad to say lol I actually knew Dana Beal in passing late 70s

Daily weed
Real L Nick Sand and Santa Cruz Mickey LSD

I could say good about it all and strong warnings too

And I still know tons of dopers

Weed smokers

And in Dixie all the ones I know are righties

Check my posting history on this subject before you slide the rack

I do not like booze

It’s personal some of those dearest to me in my near 60 years killed them selves with it

Also, the number of accidents caused by THC influence has surpassed alcohol in some areas.

Well, OK. You’re the expert after two years. Do what you think is best. Never mind the words of someone who has had off and on issues with depression and anxiety all his life, much as you describe yourself.

Carry on. I’ll have no more to say on this matter.

“And trying to blame a harmless plant God put on this earth for our use, geez, How did mankind survive and flourish all these years until we criminalized a natural plant in 1937?”

Long ago, the lazy bums died of starvation...so I blame FDR. And LBJ.

[LouAvul:] Romans 13 instructs us to obey the law.

'The other interpretation of Romans 13 was set out forcefully in a theological work first printed in 1579 by Frenchman Philippe du Plessis Mornay. Written originally in Latin, it was titled Vindiciae Contra Tyrannos, but was later reprinted in English as “A Defense of Liberty Against Tyrants” under the pen name “Junius Brutus.” This treatise took the position that government being ordained of God was referring to the general institution of government rather than to each and every distinct government.

'That is, the institution of government was ordained by God, but that did not mean that God approved of every specific government. God ordained government in lieu of anarchy — He opposes anarchy, He opposes rebelliousness and lawlessness, and He opposes wickedness. Yet, there are clearly have been governments in recent years that promote anarchy, rebellion, and wickedness (e.g. Ghadaffi in Libya, Hussein in Iraq, Bin Laden in Afghanistan, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Idi Amin in Uganda, etc.). Has God endorsed those specific governments that promote that which He hates? If so, He has contradicted His nature and is commanding submission and support to the very things that He hates — such is not possible.

'The Presbyterians, Lutherans, Baptists, Congregationalists, and most other Christian denominations during the American Revolution all believed that Romans 13 meant they were not to overthrow government as an institution and live in anarchy, but that this passage did not mean they had to submit to every civil law (note that in Hebrews 11, a number of those who made the cut in the “Faith Hall of Fame” as heroes of the faith were guilty of civil disobedience — including Daniel, the three Hebrew Children, the Hebrew Midwives, Moses, etc.). Furthermore, the Apostles in Acts 4-5 also declared their willingness to be civilly disobedient —they would obey God rather than their civil authorities.

'The real key to understanding civil disobedience and Romans 13 under this latter view, then, is to determine if the purpose of opposition is simply to resist the institution of government in general (which would be anarchy and would promote a rebellious spirit), or if it is to specifically resist bad laws, bad acts, or bad governments. The American Founding Fathers understood and embraced the second interpretation of Romans 13, and therefore strongly opposed the “Divine Right of Kings” theology which was an outworking of the first interpretation of Romans 13.'

***I was driving my daughter nuts stopping every few feet to get pics. ;)***

I used to live at MOAB and La Sal! Dead Horse Point and ARCHES is still my favorite areas!
I drove my family nuts stopping every few feet to take photos. Finally my wife said she would drive, and for me to yell when I wanted her to stop. So I did.

“STOP! STOP! NO NO, BACK THERE! BACK UP A HUNDRED YARDS! Stop sooner! THE CLOUDS HAVE MOVED! THE PHOTO IS NOT THE SAME!” Now I do all the driving when we get to picturesque country.
I have hundreds of photos, and thousands of digital photos.

Strange. I have very few photos of Oklahoma and Kansas. The Glass(Gloss) and Wichita Mountains of Oklahoma is about all. Wonder why!

Poor old Kansas gets a bad rap, it can actually be quite beautiful, especially with all the native wild sunflowers in bloom, bobbing in the ever-present breeze.

In revenge, the TEXANS should start several colonies of FIRE ANTS in California along the coast. That will teach ‘em to try and Californicate Texas!

That pic is the hwy 550 South Hill on the Southside of Durango and intersects with Co. 160 at the bottom (no bridge though) that goes east to Pagosa and Bayfield or North to Durango. You might be thinking Northern Durango on North 550.

Found it on Google Maps. It is slightly east on 160 there. It has a traffic circle on the north side where it crosses 160. On Google maps it is listed as “The bridge to nowhere.”

It is a “seed bearing plant God gave us!”

You would not grind the seeds and smoke them would you?
