It is not to the victor who goes the spoils but he who commands the high ground.

his family adopted Ba Bao — whose name means "meat bun" in Taiwanese

So the Chinese guy named his new dog "meat bun". Maybe the dog found out the English translation of the name and figured there were worse fates than tangling with a bear.

They are fortunate that only black bears...relatively mild mannered fellows...live in the San Gabriels. A brown bear would be something else entirely...and they might be in need of a new dog.

Where the hell is Bradbury???

It sure would be nice if posters at least put the state abbreviations in the headline, wouldn't it?

BUT, in this case, the article does have a few clues. But, I have to admit, they are cleverly hidden in the text:

Now, I admit, it MIGHT be hard to piece together the local. ;>)

Where the hell is Bradbury???

It is in the story:

" in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. "

By the way - it is a gated community. So the bear must have had someone on the inside to hit the buzzer.

Or maybe the bear stole and entry card or knows the key code?

The bear is an undocumented visitor who smashed through the border (pool) fence. The area is likely a sanctuary city so he can break all the laws he wishes and trespass at will without fear of prosecution.

OMG - I’m laughing. Guy names his dog ‘Meat bun’ - who gets in a fight with a bear...

I don’t care who you are - that’s funny right there!

Really - is Meat Bun like Man Bun only for a dog that belongs to a Chinese family?
