I am soon retiring, was thinking of getting a Tesla at $60,000. But I am also a closet fan of this Dodge, but at $80,000 it is above my budget.
My wife yelled at me when I showed her the pic, because she considers the Challenger as a “ghetto car” driven by “stupid people, trash”.
My dream was crushed - not only after being yelled at, but when I saw the $80,000 dollar price tag. $20,000 too much for me.
oh well... one day this car will resell for $300,000 plus in about 15 to 20 years from now.
But I would be dead by then, likely. I am 61 but in bad health. Probably be dead by 81. Actually, that would be a reason to BUY this car because I would have my toy.
But my wife is in charge of these things. Not me.

The “normal” v8 Challenger R/T is a great deal.

Sorry but they won’t be buying one of these! They get the 300’s and the Chargers.

The base car comes with only one seat. Note that the passenger and rear seat (which weigh 113 lbs) are $1 options, along with the radio. Air Conditioning is standard as it is used to cool the intake charge for that maximum launch.
Drag radials are standard. The front skinnies and the race gas ECU are part of the optional "prestage kit" that you can get at the dealer with your Demon.
Of course you don't get 100 octane gas at the dealer, but you don't get 89, 91 or 93 there either. If you don't have 100 octane available, the Demon will make 808 hp and 717 ft-lbs, good enough for 9.9 second quarter miles. Still faster than pretty much anything out there.
It is not a special mod. It is a stock Demon. If you read the article, the Demon without a rollout does the 0-60 in 2.3 seconds, whereas the claims with the Tesla of 2.28 were with rollout. The article states that the Demon could do 2.1 seconds with a rollout and the Tesla would be 2.53 without. The only thing fake are the claims in your post.
And the Demon can do that quite well. It can hold 1g on the lateral. But that's not what this car was built for.
Personally, I like the feel of insane acceleration better than carving up twisties, even on my sport bike. So this car is built for people like me... if it wasn't so expensive.
That article came out over a month before the Demon was revealed to the public. It is simply Road and Track trying to read into screen shots of the car's Uconnect system.

Things you should note: First off, there's no indication that these numbers are real—they could just be decoys, place-holders to demonstrate what the Demon's Performance Pages are capable of showing, but not meant to convey any information about those performance measures themselves.
At no point does this article link to the NHRA certified times that Dodge released during the public unveiling a month later. Nor has Road and Track actually tested a Demon.

Not to mention the BMW S1000RR is 403 pounds and 199hp is 2 lb/hp(!) at a cost of only $20,000.
You can't get new one for that. The cheapest Model S is north of $80K. Even if you get the full tax credit, it well above $70K.
I forget what that MOTOGP replica Ducati released a while back was, but it was insane. Price and performance. Too bad I am not so rich and 69, would love to ride one just once.

I really am. But it is sort of a ... Nope. I’m not going to say it.
I seem to recall hearing, that some jet was the same way.
It was maybe 10 years ago, so I’m sure more can now.

There’s also the philosophical issue of “true performance” versus “perceived performance”, an example would be the thrill of the wooden roller coaster versus that of the modern all-steel roller coaster.
I prefer wooden roller coasters, carbs, the rumble, the smell of fuel and oil, the King James Bible, and the feeling of sheer terror.
