The first series shocked viewers with its high volume of explicit sex scenes. And season two of controversial BBC drama Versailles is set to continue in the same vein - with a massive 30 X-rated scenes featuring across ten new episodes. The jaw-dropping scenes include the King's mistress stripping off completely as she seduces Louis XIV, as well as courtiers enjoying a mass orgy.

Looks like this BBC period drama will not come across the pond to be broadcast on Masterpiece Theater. More fitting for HBO.

Bathing was so infrequent then, even amongst the elites. Oy.

I read something about how Versailles did not have areas to relieve oneself so people would just do it in corners around the palace.

Mass orgies of courtiers? Who they hell wrote this? Marquis De Sade?

What I'm shocked about is how Europeans known for godlessness, liberalism and immorality with no bounds are shocked! That and that something like this didn't come out 10 years ago!

Courtiers enjoying a mass orgy at Versailles?

Total fiction.

My God! How degenerate the BBC has become. This is simply pornography dressed up as a drama.

Goody! What the world needs is more mass-produced porno. Not.

I remember the owner of Penthouse Bob Guccione produced a film about Caligula. It was universally panned at the time but it looks like Guccione was ahead of his time.

I don’t know why they want to focus on sex. These historical dramas are good without it. It just slows them down. I can’t believe that someone who isn’t already attracted to this genre would tune in just for the sex. I’ve watched “The Tudors”, “The Borgias” and “The Medicis” on Netflicks and liked them all. The did have a little sex but it was soft and generally not gratuitous, and what they did have hurt rather than helped the production by slowing down the narrative.

I guess what they did have was legions of servants to clean it up.

I don’t mind it because it makes for a less sanitized historical drama when it reminds that people of earlier times were just as randy and irresponsible about sex as they are now. But it can drag no doubt. Rome was the best at it.

Masterpiece Theater

It certainly would perk up the fund raising drive more than a free PBS tote bag.

I sure wish Rome would have hung around for more seasons. It was one of my favorite cable series of all time. They really did it right.

Yes, and he paid for some pretty popular 1979 stars to perform in it...

Malcolm McDowell, Teresa Ann Savoy, Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole, John Steiner and John Gielgud.

“I don’t know why they want to focus on sex. These historical dramas are good without it.”

It’s “Game of Thrones” syndrome. The story might get niche fans on its own, but throw in hot young actors and actresses, and at least one guaranteed nude scene per episode, and you expand the audience and get bigger ratings.

The BBC got rid of Top Gear for this?

I watched much of it and stopped because of all the pornography. All that does is distract from what could be a really good historical drama. I’d rather see some really good battle scenes than constant copulation, especially homosexual copulation (ick!!).
